TRUSTEES: Off to shameful start

| July 15, 2011 10:00 PM

So Hamilton and Seymour are abstaining on all votes... including the budget vote? Shameful! If they didn't understand it (and school finance is tough) they should have been meeting with district officials even before they were elected. If they did understand it, they failed in their obligation to represent ALL the citizens in their zone.

Their objections look petty and personal. As a retired Vice-Chair for Finance of Billings School District 2 and a member of this district's Financial Review Team, I speak with some background when I say the district needs all trustees responding whether they vote "yea" or "nay."

So Hamilton and Seymour: You didn't get to choose Edie Brooks' replacement; so what? Life goes on. If that is the only school board decision you're on the short end of, well, you won't be doing your job as a trustee, which you certainly aren't right now.

Will you abstain for the entire time your suit is pending in court? If so, the district should investigate declaring the trustee positions for your zones open and calling a special election or appointing those who want to serve their zone and community. Quinn's selection is done; you two need to get to work for the kids. Here comes more money for the district... will you be abstaining when the district decides how to apply it?

Terrible representation if you're not going to do your job as a trustee. School Board politics are tough... get used to it... or resign.
