USDA - Forest Service Idaho Panhandle National Forests Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District Kootenai County, Idaho Randy Swick (District Ranger for the Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests) has announced his decision to implement the Dry Gulch Fuelwood project which involves the salvage of approximately 95 dead Douglas-fir and grand fir trees along a portion of Roads 1593P and 1562. These roadways are utilized as public ATV and motorcycle routes. This area is located within the Dry Gulch drainage (a portion of sections 25, 26, 27, 35, and 36, T51N, R3W, B.M.). Dead trees suitable for fuelwood material will be removed within 150 feet above and 125 feet below the roadways covering an area of approximately 85 acres. Equipment to remove this material will be required to remain on the roadway. This harvest activity will generate approximately 40-50 cords of fuelwood. The Forest Service has determined that the Dry Gulch Fuelwood project falls within categories of actions listed in 36 CFR 220.6(e)(13) which would not require documentation an Environmental Assessment (EA) or Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and that no extraordinary circumstances (as described in 36 CFR 220.6) exist that would preclude use of category (e)(13) (harvest of dead and dying trees not to exceed 250 acres). This decision is subject to appeal pursuant to 36 CFR 215. A written appeal must be submitted within 45 days following the publication date of the legal notice of this decision in the Coeur d'Alene Press (Coeur d'Alene, ID).
