Harold Greenfield, 76

| January 31, 2011 1:20 PM

On Jan. 29, 2011, Harold M. Greenfield passed away after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. He was fondly known by friends and family as "Greenie." He was born April 5, 1934, in Jerome to Gordon and Margaret (Stumpf) Greenfield.

In 1954 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and proudly served his country. He was an aircraft electrician and served in Vietnam. In 1957 while stationed at Fairchild AFB, he met and married his wife, Shirley Koss. Together they raised three daughters. After 21 years in the military he retired in Rathdrum and then worked for Lakeland School District as a bus mechanic for 13 years.

Harold loved camping, traveling, tinkering on his tractors and the outdoors. He worked on his beloved property to the very end, mowing, watering and playing on his backhoe. He loved to sit on his porch looking at his gorgeous views of Rathdrum Mountain, Rathdrum Creek and watch and listen as the trains went by. He was a kind and gentle man and was greatly loved and will be missed. In this life we cannot do great things, we can only do small things with great love.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife in 2001.

He is survived by his children, Cindy and Larry Mathisen of Tacoma, Wash., Sheree Greenfield and Kelly Chadderdon of Coeur d'Alene, and Lori and Larry Snider of Newport, Wash.; his loving brothers and sisters, Edie and Hoppie Hopson of Rathdrum, Darvin Greenfield of Hagerman, Dick and Debbie Greenfield of Kuna, Jolene Payne of Jerome, Delores Fox of Tacoma, JoAn McConnell of Jerome, Gerry Hadley of Filer, Bernadine and Bill Guymon of Mesa, Ariz.; and his best friend, Misty!

Family and friends are invited to an informal gathering from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at his home, 14745 N. Parkway St., Rathdrum. A private military graveside memorial will be held at a later date with Yates Funeral Home in care of the arrangements.

A special thank you to Hospice of North Idaho for their support and care, with memorial contributions preferred to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835.
