Vikings win own tourney in a romp
COEUR d'ALENE - Putting 11 wrestlers into the finals and producing three champions, the host Coeur d'Alene Vikings dominated the inagural Coeur d'Alene Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday with 209.5 points, 89 more than second-place Kellogg in the 13-team event.
A.J. Konda (103), Garrett Demers (171) and Matt Howard (215) won titles for the Vikings, who entered 17 wrestlers and saw 14 of them place in the top three.
"I think we're wrestling and heading in the right direction," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. "We didn't wrestle as well in the finals as I would have liked, but I was real happy with the overall performance. Overall, it was an outstanding team effort."
Demers avenged a loss to Cole Jesienouski of Post Falls on Thursday with a 7-2 victory in the finals on Saturday. Viking teammate Shaun Duffy injury defaulted to Howard in the finals.
Post Falls had four winners — Tyler Booth (140), Austin Wilson (145), Nathan McLeod (152) and Kendall Nuss (160). Wilson beat Trevor Hampton of Bonners Ferry, a two-time state 3A champion, 8-6 in the finals.
“Our guys did a really good job, being short a couple of guys (due to illness),” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “With our guys, our focus is to circle the wagons and get tough and make it through the adversity and that’s going to make us stronger in the end.”
Sandpoint had two winners — Payton Dillon (112) and Garret Belgarde (119).
Other local winners included James Hegge (130) of Priest River, Chris Vergobbi (135) of Kellogg and Ty Beare (285) of Kootenai.
