Ugly Fish coming to Riverstone

The name isn't pretty, but the Asian food option in a new building in Riverstone will be welcome - not just as another restaurant choice, but also as a neighbor to businesses in a less-traveled corner of the complex.

The Ugly Fish is under construction at 1927 W. Riverstone Drive. The 5,000-square-foot restaurant with 110 seats should open in May. The menu will include traditional Chinese cuisine, seafood, steak, Peking roast duck, Mongolian beef, Shanghai red-braised shank, lobster, sushi, wasabi mashed potato, beer, wine, soft drinks and, of course, ugly fish, according to owner Bin Sun.

He studied culinary arts in his native China and in 1996 came to the United States where he was a chef in Asian restaurants. He opened the Ding How (see related Tidbit below) Restaurant in Liberty Lake in 2005 and the Ginger Asian Bistro on Spokane's South Hill in 2009. The Ugly Fish will be open Tuesday through Sunday with 15-20 employees. Watch for a www.uglyfishasianbistro.com website.

Ipanema Grille to open Feb. 15

Brazilian barbecue will be the specialty of the Grille From Ipanema on the second floor of the Parkside Tower at 601 Front Ave. With a tropical theme to match its namesake beach near Rio de Janeiro, the restaurant's menu will include all-you-can-eat steak brought on skewers, salad and hotplate bars, grilled pineapple and beverages.

With views of Lake Coeur d'Alene, the restaurant will seat 115 customers inside and 75 on the outside plaza. Probable hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Options include catering, private room service in Parkside and valet parking.

Originally from Brazil, co-owner Adriano de Souza came to North Idaho in 2009 as a chef for Bonsai Bistro. Check www.thegrillefromipanema.com.

Here's this

week's tidbits:

• Watch for probable news next week about new yogurt and bakery supply companies in Coeur d'Alene.

• The Easyriders Road House motorcycle company in Post Falls has closed.

• More on "old" gold teeth. My former NIC student Cori Flowers of Sandpoint e-mailed that her grandfather would save his gold teeth that had fallen out or were replaced and she had them made into a ring after he died.

• I was interested in the restaurant name Ding How because we would frequent one of the same name in Seattle, and the owner's wife would take our 1-year-old daughter into the kitchen to play with her kids while we enjoyed a quiet dinner. Oh, Ding How means "thumbs up" - a fitting name.
