LEVY: We can't just keep cutting

| January 30, 2011 9:00 PM

Tuesday, March 8, is going to be a very important day for us here in Coeur d'Alene. On that day, we'll vote to determine if we're going to support the renewal and essential levies for the Coeur d'Alene School District.

The facts of the matter are clear: As the budget crisis has hit us all, District 271 has cut nearly $9 million over the last two years to run as efficiently and economically as possible. The current levy rate of $1.51 is by far the lowest of the 13 largest districts in Idaho. Failure to pass these levies will cost 277 hard-working district employees their jobs and compromise the quality of education offered to our children.

One of the most compelling reasons we moved here with our three school-aged children five years ago was the community's unyielding support of education. Here in Coeur d'Alene, we believe a strong education is critical to a productive community. We have long supported efforts to improve our schools and provide outstanding opportunities for our children. And now, as state budgets shrink and leave our local school district relying on local support to keep the basics in place, it's comforting to know that our community, our neighbors, have the power to keep us afloat in their hands.

Come March 8, join me in voting Yes on the renewal levy and Yes on the essential levy. The strength of our community depends on it.
