Cougher takes home Saunders Award

After spending 40 years in various Silver Valley mineshafts, Harry Franklin Cougher has won the prestigious William Lawrence Saunders Gold Medal Award for 2010.

During his four-decade stint in the valley, Cougher held senior positions at all but one of the mines within the Silver Valley's Coeur d'Alene Mining District. He spent 17 years at the Bunker Hill Co., 17 years at Sunshine Mining Co., and six years at Coeur d'Alene Mines.

As one of the heroes of the Sunshine Mine Fire of 1972 he participated in several reconnaissance missions, remaining active in the search and rescue operation for 13 days until the last victims were recovered. His actions during the disaster later earned him the "State of Idaho Certificate of Commendation," in 1972.

Cougher graduated from the University of Idaho's College of Mines in 1966 with a degree in mining engineering and dove headfirst into the Bunker Hill mine as a entry level mining engineer, packing a transit. Bunker Hill was the place where he first came into contact with the deep dark, spending the summer of 1964 underground as a greenhorn intern.

Over his 17 years as Bunker Hill he gradually earned more prestigious titles. After his initial job as a surveyor he claimed the title Mine Foreman, then Chief Mining Engineer, and by 1975, Bunker Mine Superintendent.

In 1977 he became Bunker Hill's manager of mining in the Coeur d'Alene district, adding Crescent Mining operations and the representation of Bunker Hill's 70 percent interest in the Star Mine to his growing list of responsibilities.

His responsibilities grew beyond the U.S. in 1980 when he earned the title of Vice President of Mining again at Bunker Hill. Aside from his duties in the Silver Valley he also was held accountable for the progress and success of properties in Washington, British Columbia, Nevada and Missouri.

Cougher now resides in Boise with his wife of 45 years, Linda.
