'Zona clamps down on UCLA

Derrick Williams scored 22 points and Arizona defeated UCLA 85-74 on Thursday night at Tucson, Ariz., to take sole possession of second place in the Pac-10 Conference.

The Wildcats (17-4, 6-2) shot 52 percent from the field while the Bruins shot 41.4 percent.

Reeves Nelson finished with a game-high 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting and added 10 rebounds for the Bruins (13-7, 5-3), but he fouled out with 2:58 remaining. He started the game despite being questionable because of an ankle injury.

The Wildcats led by as many as 18 points in the second half.

Arizona improved to 12-0 at home this season. The Wildcats snapped UCLA's four-game winning streak.

California 85, Oregon State 57: At Berkeley, Calif., Harper Kamp scored 18 points for his ninth straight game in double figures, Jorge Gutierrez had 16 points and a career-high 11 assists and California beat Oregon State (8-11, 3-5 Pac-10).

Markhuri Sanders-Frison had 15 points and nine rebounds and freshman Allen Crabbe added 12 points and seven rebounds for Cal (11-9, 4-4), which kicked off a four-game homestand at Haas Pavilion by sending the Beavers to their fifth loss in six games.

Southern California 63, Arizona State 61: At Tempe, Ariz., Nikola Vucevic had 26 points and 12 rebounds, and Maurice Jones added 14 points to help Southern California (12-9, 4-4 Pac-10) beat Arizona State (9-11, 1-7).

USC overcame a rash of early turnovers by getting the ball inside to Vucevic and held off the Sun Devils down the stretch to win for just the fifth time in its last 22 conference road games.

Oregon 67, Stanford 59: At Stanford, Calif., Joevan Catron scored 15 points, and Oregon ended 25 years of frustration at Stanford (10-9, 3-5).

Jay-R Stowbridge matched his career high with three 3-pointers and scored 13 points as the Ducks (10-10, 3-5 Pac-10) won at Stanford for the first time since 1986.

New Mexico State 96, Boise State 87, OT: At Las Cruces, N.M., Troy Gillenwater scored a career-high 34 points to lead New Mexico State (11-11, 5-3 WAC) past the Broncos (12-8, 5-3).

La'Shard Anderson led the Broncos with 21 points.

Utah State 84, San Jose State 65: At San Jose, Calif., Brian Green came off the bench to score a career-high 25 points and Utah State (19-2, 8-0 Western Athletic Conference) extended its winning streak to 14 games with a win over San Jose State (9-10, 1-7).

Green made his first eight shots from the floor, including five 3-pointers, and didn't miss until six minutes remained in the game. Green also matched his career-best of six rebounds.

Nevada 79, Fresno State 76: At Reno, Nev., Dario Hunt had 24 points and 11 rebounds as Nevada (8-13, 5-3 WAC) beat Fresno State (8-11, 3-5).

Portland 79, San Diego 64: At Portland, Ore., Jared Stohl hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points to lead Portland past San Diego (4-17, 0-6).

Luke Sikma added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Pilots (15-6, 3-3 West Coast Conference), who broke a two-game skid.

Santa Clara 71, Pepperdine 59: At Malibu, Calif., Marc Trasolini scored seven of his game-high 18 points in helping Santa Clara jump to a 26-5 lead, and the Broncos (13-9, 4-2 WCC) went on to beat Pepperdine (8-15, 2-4).

San Francisco 61, Loyola Marymount 60: At Los Angeles, Michael Williams hit a game-winning 3-pointer and Rashad Green had 20 points and 12 rebounds as San Francisco (11-10, 5-1) rallied for its fourth straight victory with a win over Loyola Marymount (8-12, 1-5 WCC).

No. 19 Vanderbilt 81, Mississippi State 74: At Starkville, Miss., Jeffery Taylor scored 25 points and John Jenkins added 21 as Vanderbilt (15-4, 3-2) beat Mississippi State (10-9, 2-3 Southeastern Conference).

Indiana 52, No. 20 Illinois 49: At Bloomington, Ind., Jordan Hulls scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half, and Tom Pritchard tipped in a missed shot with 44.2 seconds to go, leading Indiana (11-10, 2-6 Big Ten) past Illinois (14-7, 4-4).

Michigan 61, No. 25 Michigan State 57: At East Lansing, Mich., Zack Novak scored 19 points and Stu Douglass made a big 3-pointer with 20 seconds left, lifting Michigan (12-9, 2-6 Big Ten) past the Spartans (12-8, 4-4).
