Coeur d'Alene dental clinic adds new low radiation scanner

Dentists Spencer Wirig and Paige Landers, at Lakeview Dental, in Coeur d'Alene, added a cone beam computer tomography (CBCT or CT) scanning device to their practice.

The low radiation digital scanner, designed for dental office use, improves the ability of dental and medical doctors to see in detail the structure and position of the teeth and supporting bone.

The scanner, manufactured by PreXion Inc., of San Mateo, Calif., cost $150,000.

Wirig said the scanner allows the practice to better plan and place implants, treat gum disease, perform root canals, perform bone grafts and solve complex problems.

CBCT imaging is commonly used in the medical community. During the past several years, a large number of dentists and dental specialists have seen an increase in the effective use of this digital technology.

Landers said the practice will now have access to more data. It reduces risks and complications.

Wirig said the scanner allows the practice to take fewer traditional 2-D images.

"The patients can be given a disc with the scan to be viewed by other dentists and specialists," he said.

The practice was previously using a digital 2-D panoramic X-ray machine.

Lakeview Dental is located at 801 W. Milwaukee Drive.
