Alumni night planned for Thursday

POST FALLS - Post Falls wrestling coach Pete Reardon announced the annual alumni wrestling night will be held Thursday in its match with defending state champion Coeur d'Alene. All former Post Falls wrestlers are encouraged to attend.

The match, which starts at 5 p.m. at The Arena, will feature a hall of legends award to be presented to one alumni wrestler during the evening.

Post Falls is currently ranked No. 1 in the state.

Tormey named Cougar linebackers coach

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University Football Head Coach Paul Wulff announced Monday that Chris Tormey has joined the Cougar football staff as linebackers coach. Tormey, who grew up in Spokane, comes to Pullman after serving the past two years at the University of Hawaii.

"Chris is going to be a great addition to our program," Wulff said. "He has been the head coach at both Idaho and Nevada, has 15 years of experience in the Pac-10, is a tremendous recruiter and is a very hard worker. He also grew up in Eastern Washington and understands the uniqueness and culture of coaching at Washington State University."

At Hawaii Tormey served as the special team coach and also assisted with the safeties. In his first season he coached Mana Silva, who led the Western Athletic Conference in interceptions with six.

Chiefs' Johnson named WHL Player of the Week

SPOKANE - The WHL Player of the Week is forward Tyler Johnson of the Spokane Chiefs.

Johnson, a former Coeur d'Alene Laker, picked up 10 points, scoring two goals and eight assists to go with a plus-3 rating, in four games over the past week, helping the Chiefs to 2-1-1-0 record.

Johnson collected a pair of assists in the Chiefs' 6-1 win over Chilliwack last Tuesday. On Friday Spokane hosted the Kootenay, and Johnson scored one goal and added two assists in their 5-2 victory. The next night, Johnson had a goal and aassist as the Chiefs hosted Kelowna. On Sunday, in a battle of the top two teams in WHL U.S. Division, Johnson picked up three assists in the see-saw affair that saw the Winterhawks come out on top 6-5 in over-time vs. Portland.

Johnson's 10 points in the past four games has him ranked 1st among all WHL scorers with 79 points (36 goals, 43 assists) in 46 games played.

Johnson, a 20 year-old from Spokane, is playing his fourth season with the Chiefs who made the hometown product their 11th round selection at the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft. He has since gone on to appear in 241 WHL games gathering 111 goals, 135 assists for 246 career points, all while maintaining a plus-77 plus/minus rating.
