TEACHERS: Union must compromise

| January 23, 2011 9:00 PM

Thank you for your letter on Wednesday, Chris Shelton. Sherri Wood and Rick Jones, both in the teaching profession and part of the teachers union have attacked the changes that are being proposed.

It's time for people to start standing up to this union. The shortage in funding, starting from the federal level, is in large part, due to the contractual obligations of the Union to the Pension Funds of retirees, and many of these are administrative retirees who are getting huge retirement packages in roundabout ways i.e. "accumulated sick days and unused vacation days."

In the private sector, how many people are allowed to "acquire" extra income from time not even used or spent in the workplace? The Unions have a choke hold on the system and in order to rectify a bad budget, cuts are being made.

I have family in the teaching profession and fully understand how this is affecting regular teachers. Something has got to change. Raising property taxes will cause more financial worries to our state residents who are already struggling. It's time for some compromise, if the union is willing.
