McEUEN: Too big, too deep

| January 21, 2011 7:30 AM

I think the plans for McEuen Field are far too reaching. One park can't be all things to all people. That's why we have many different parks throughout Coeur d'Alene, to meet the needs of a diverse population.

We are talking about spending millions of dollars for the education corridor, why not have some of the proposed McEuen Park amenities at that location. Beautiful walking trails, gardens, fountains, ball courts, all along the river.

McEuen park can be better but the changes needn't be so drastic. Personally I'd love to see a skating rink. We need downtown winter activities to stimulate business and it's a fun healthy activity for families of all ages.

The worst part of the proposed plan is moving the Third Street boat ramp. Please, please, reconsider! The reason is simple economics. Locals and visitors need access to downtown when they boat to Coeur d'Alene. Folks want to shop at our restaurants, shops, galleries. It seems ridiculous to remove an asset that works for the town, brings in revenue, and has recently been remodeled. Moving the boat ramp will make it difficult for boaters to get into town without a car. This will hurt everyone; we will have more downtown vacancies, more unemployment, and more hassle for tourists and locals. Leave the boat-ramp it works for us all.
