Girls just want to have fun

| January 19, 2011 8:00 PM

Timarie Lindquist, her mom, Terry Clark and good friend, Weslie Keogh enjoyed a whirlwind, three-day "girls" trip to California just for the fun of it.

The trio was in the studio audience of the Ellen Show and received generous camera time during the dancing-in-the-aisles intro. Timarie tells me they received quite a swag bag of goodies ... including a $100 Target gift card and a Blu Ray DVD player. Jenny McCarthy and The Bachelor host, Chris Harrison were guests that day. During a touristy tour of the Hollywood Walk of Fame near the Kodak Theater, an audience rep for the Dr. Phil Show gave them tickets for the next day. So away they went for that show's taping, again receiving lots of camera "face time" in the audience. Both of those shows aired on Monday.

***It was one week ago today that we all learned who held the winning Mega Millions ticket in our community. A fun story was told to me by Holly Lahti's supervisor at Inland Northwest Bank, Suzanna Spencer.

A few days before Holly had shared the news of her win with anyone, Suzanna had put up a message on the bank's reader board, inviting the unknown lottery winner to deposit the winnings in the bank. So when Holly confided in her boss that she was, in fact, the big lottery winner but wanted to keep the news quiet, Suzanna asked if she should take the message off the reader board. Holly said no, it was fun to have the message up there while it was their little secret that the $190 million lottery winner was right there all the time.***

There were no doubt many hugs and happy tears throughout the community in the wee hours of Tuesday morning with members of the Idaho Army National Guard's 145th Brigade / 116th Calvary returning home on leave from their Baghdad, Iraq deployment. The soldiers left from Post Falls last September.***

Last week, along with my 2010 River City Leadership Academy classmate Scot Haug, we facilitated Media/Public Safety Day for the 2011 RCLA class. It was great to be able to tap into a network of current and former Press/Hagadone Communication staffers ... Mike Patrick, Erna Rhinehart, Nils Rosdahl, David Townsend, Marc Stewart, Jerome Pollos, Brian Walker and even Dave Oliveria, who years ago was editor at the Kalispell Daily Interlake. In the public safety segment, Chief Haug, Chief Wayne Longo and Sheriff Rocky Watson talked law enforcement in Kootenai County. At one point I asked all of the long time public servants if they'd share the most gratifying moment in their law enforcement careers and it was no small bit ironic that not a one of the three held enforcing the law as that memory ... for Chief Longo it was being first on the scene for a heart attack victim and able to provide life-saving care, for Chief Haug resuscitating a toddler who was drowning and for Sheriff Watson a very public crime that was very personal. He replied to the question, simply and sincerely ... bringing Shasta Groene home after 28 days.***
