CITYLINK: Is not a 'free ride'

| January 19, 2011 4:20 AM

There never was a "free ride;" someone, somewhere, pays for it.

We have often wondered why in the world would the Citylink's services be free for all the riders, but all us taxpayers foot the bill! Those who ride should pay a minimum of $1 each trip ($.75 for seniors and handicapped) to cover just a little of the costs regardless of whether or not they only ride for one block or 40 miles.

Just consider what you and I (the taxpayers and the Tribe) are funding: Fuel, storage and maintenance, cleaning the bus, the windows, floors, adjusting the doors, removing the chewing gum, sweeping out the litter, repairing the bike/wheelchair racks, painting over the dings and dents, scratches and graffiti. Then there's the ongoing engine servicing, exhaust, brakes, mufflers, shocks, transmission and tire replacements, plus the cost of the drivers and dispatchers' wages and insurance. And, don't forget the liability insurance to cover all those riders! A month's worth of tickets would be just $30 which isn't bad at all when considering only the rising price of fuel. Those who use a service should take the responsibility of paying for at least a portion of it.
