SCHOOLS: Reform sound, sorely needed

| January 14, 2011 5:43 AM

Wow! Someone has actually started to put kids' needs ahead of teachers' needs. A plan based on performance rather than longevity. What a unique concept.

Then to also begin to develop 20th century USEFUL technology and programs.

Perhaps we can even start thinking of how education can actually PREPARE them for a productive career. Not just a bunch of social stuff.

I have another idea for these real forward thinkers. What about if we did the same thing for our other education "Sacred Cow," the facilities that house the students. The monstrous, ultra expensive buildings and grounds that have nothing to do with "quality education."

Every time a bond issue comes up we are made to feel that we hate children if we don't spend huge amounts on not only the buildings, but also the fact that those edifices take so much more maintenance.

It is always amazing to me how places like charter schools and home schools can most often outscore the public schools in spite of minimal facilities, but quality staff.

The idea that more dollars make for better educated kids has proven totally false over the last 30 years, yet that is still the cry of the teachers unions over and over. "Stop hating our children, pour more money in."
