STAR hearing has been canceled

A hearing before the Kootenai County commissioners on a research center in Rathdrum has been canceled.

The hearing on the Science, Technology and Research Center (STAR) proposed by Lorna and Paul Finman was canceled due to personal reasons, said the applicants' engineer, Steve Syrcle.

"We received some recent information of a personal nature that we need to have resolved, prior to moving forward," said Syrcle, with Tri-State Consulting Engineers.

The hearing has yet to be rescheduled.

"Rest assured, we will be back," Syrcle said.

Syrcle said the applicants hope to break ground sometime this year on the proposed 20,000-square-foot center off Highway 41 on Willadsen Road, estimated to cost $2.5 million.

A conditional use permit is needed for the project.

"We know we have a lot of people in support of the science center," Syrcle said. "We hope to bring it to the community as a positive asset."

North Idaho on high avalanche alert

COEUR d'ALENE - Due to high avalanche hazards, visitors to the Idaho Panhandle National Forest are urged to check weather and avalanche reports, and use caution when skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling in the national forest.

Current and predicted heavy storm activity is increasing the avalanche hazard in the Inland Northwest to high.

Winter recreationists should beware of slopes greater than 30 degrees. As the week progresses, avalanche danger is expected to increase due to wind loading and warm temperatures turning snow to rain.
