First step to health

I was sitting down with my husband this weekend and we started talking about all the things we were ready to tackle now that we made it through the holidays. We realized that we had put many things on the back burner for the past several weeks or even the past month. This conversation sparked a thought. Why do so many people put health on the back burner (and not just during the holiday season)?

I believe one of the main reasons people don't take action in creating a healthier life is simply because they don't know where to start.

There are so many fad diets, exercise programs, supplement regimens and medications out there, who knows what to do? The reality is many people are so overwhelmed that they put their health out of their minds and do nothing. The best thing to do is to start simple.

This year, why not challenge yourself to understand the basic foundation of health and take action to achieve a healthy lifestyle? The key is to understand what your body is really doing inside. Once you understand it, you learn how to protect your body from harm and let it operate optimally and free of restrictions.

The body contains something I call innate intelligence. That innate intelligence is what allows a cut to heal, your heart to beat or your lungs to function even while you are fast asleep. You see, you don't need to understand all of the functions of your body in order for those functions to occur. These functions take place without your direct thought process. In the case of your heart beat, you can't use your brain to stop it even if you want to for some reason. These functions of your body keep you alive 24 hours of the day... all you have to do is keep them healthy.

To execute these innate functions, your brain creates messages and sends them out to your body via the nervous system. Your nervous system is made up of three parts, the brain, the spinal cord and the nerves that travel throughout your body. Just like your skull protects your brain, your spine protects your spinal cord as well as the nerves that exit between the spinal bones.

Many people go to great lengths to protect their skulls (as they should). The funny thing is, without the spinal cord and nerves, the brain couldn't do a thing to keep us alive. It can create information all day, but without a route to send that information, it is useless. All those innate functions in your body that keep you alive depend on information received from the brain through the spinal cord and nerves.

As you're probably starting to see, your spinal cord and nerves are just as vitally important as your brain. In fact, the nervous system as a whole is the most important system in your body. Without it, you would not be able to function. If it were to stop working, even for a second, you would cease to be alive.

Yet, how often do you hear someone talk about their nervous system health? I would venture a guess that it's rare?

Unless you are a patient of chiropractic care, I doubt that you think much about the health of your nervous system. However, that is what chiropractic care is all about. If you are having trouble figuring out where to start achieving better health, the most important system in the body is a good place to start. Chiropractic ensures that your body can operate without internal hindrance from nervous system disruptions. On the road to health, you want your most important internal system to be up and running at its full potential.
