Viks pin down a repeat

NAMPA - For the Coeur d'Alene Vikings, Saturday's state 5A wrestling tournament had all the makings of another sequel from the Rocky franchise of films - a rematch, a storied opponent and a title on the line.

All Vikings senior Caleb Davis had to do was make sure the ending was one fit for Hollywood. By the time Davis was done, all that was missing was a triumphant symphony score.

Davis pinned Caldwell’s Tim Hartwig with 1:14 remaining in the second period to give him the 189-pound weight class individual title and secure Coeur d’Alene’s second straight team title.

“We wrestled our butts off all year just to get in this position,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “And then for Caleb to win it like that for us — it’s just incredible.”

Heading into Davis’ match, Coeur d’Alene held the slimmest possible lead over Caldwell, 199-198.5. Neither team had a wrestler in either of the final two weights, setting up the winner-take-all match.

Last season, Hartwig beat Davis for third place in the consolation round — and they hadn’t seen each other since.

And by the time the two clashed on the mat, Davis knew what was at stake.

“I just tried to stay focused and visualize what I wanted to do in the match,” said Davis, who calmly paced back and forth for more than an hour as Coeur d’Alene’s other two finalists — A.J. Konda (103) and Johnny Peregrina (160) — were both pinned in earlier matches. “I didn’t want to get too uptight.”

Moffat made sure Davis didn’t feel the weight of his team’s title chances with a few encouraging words before stepping onto the mat.

“Coach Moffat just told me not to worry about what happens out there,” Davis said. “He just told me to go wrestle my best and don’t worry about it. That was really what I needed to stay loose and focused.”

Davis wasn’t worried, but he was concerned early in the match as Hartwig took a 2-1 lead after the first period.

Then early in the second period, Hartwig took a sloppy run at Davis that led to Hartwig being pinned for the only time in his high school career.

“I never thought I would have a chance to pin him,” said Davis, who took control and never let Hartwig up. “But I smelled blood in the water and just went after him.”

Once the official slapped the mat signaling Davis’ victory, the boisterous Coeur d’Alene fans erupted in jubilation.

“Winning the team title this time around was much more difficult,” Moffat said. “But at the same time, it’s much more rewarding. Nobody thought we could win state again but us.”

The Vikings held an 8.5-point lead heading into the finals and needed at least one win to secure a victory over hard-charging Caldwell, which had won its first three matches Saturday to move from third to a half-point behind Coeur d’Alene before the 189-pound match.

By the time the finals matches began, Post Falls had all but fallen out of contention for a trophy (a fourth-place or higher finish). But that fact didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of the Trojans’ finalists as Post Falls wrestlers finished with three individual titles.

In the 135-pound weight class, Post Falls junior James Ost successfully defended his state title by defeating Highland’s Anthony Esplin.

“I just had to stay in control and work my moves,” Ost said. “Anything less than winning state would have been unacceptable — and I want to win it again next year.”

The most thrilling finish went to Post Falls’ Tyler Booth, who won 4-2 in overtime against Mountain View’s Beau Roberts.

Earlier this season, Roberts bested Booth 2-1, in a match devoid of any takedowns. This time, Booth used a pair of takedowns — one in regulation and another in overtime — to notch the win.

“I couldn’t get up in the third period, which is what he did to me last time we wrestled, except he was ahead,” Booth said. “This time, I knew I just had to take a shot. So, when he gave up some position, I just slowly worked my way around to get the two points.”

Post Falls’ Austin Wilson (145) lost on a fall to Boise State recruit Casey George of Lewiston in the second period for a second-place medal, while Nathan McLeod (152) lost in the finals by major decision 11-2 to Caldwell’s Colby Kloetzer, a South Dakota State signee.

Post Falls senior Cole Jesienouski won the 171-pound weight class title with a 3-0 decision over Mountain View’s Brennan Connolly.

“I thought it would be a close match, but I got a quick takedown in the first period and that kind of gave me the confidence I needed,” said Jesienouski, who didn’t place last season at state. “I think this goes to show what you can do when you put a lot of hard work into something and dedicate yourself to it.”

The Trojans’ Kendall Nuss (160) also won a fifth-place medal, while Cody Johnson (189) took sixth.

Post Falls finished seventh overall with 156.5 points, while Lake City was 15th with 29 points.

In the consolation bracket finals on Saturday morning, Coeur d’Alene maintained its lead with three fifth-place finishes by Hudson Staub (125), Kyle Siegwarth (130), and Thomas Tucker (215), and two third-place finishes by Kenny Staub (140) and Garrett Demers (171).

Staub’s third-place finish was a difficult one after he blew a comfortable lead in his second-round match with Highland’s Cole Weir with a late third-period pin. However, Staub wrestled back in the consolation bracket to earn another shot at Weir in the third-place final.

This time, Staub didn’t let anything slip away, including Weir, as Staub dominated for a 14-2 major decision victory.

Demers’ 11-3 major decision over Centennial’s Jon Fisher was also noteworthy since Demers entered the tournament outside of the top seeds.

Cd’A had to endure a few nervous hours after Shaun Duffy left his third-place finals match with Idaho Falls’ Brett Conrad after sustaining a head injury.

As a precautionary measure, medical personnel removed Duffy from the mat on a stretcher and took him to St. Luke’s Hospital in Meridian for further testing. It was reported that Duffy sustained a concussion while fracturing his C-7 vertebrae, an injury that doesn’t require surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery.

In the 4A tournament, Sandpoint’s lone finalist, Garret Belgrade lost to Columbia’s Kam Reddish 7-2, and finished second. Belgarde was a state champion two years ago and a runner-up last year.

In the 3A tournament, Bonners Ferry finished second with 151 points and a pair of individual titles behind Snake River with 165 points.

In the 140-pound weight class, Bonners Ferry senior Ben Watt avenged last year’s one-point loss in the finals to Buhl’s Michael McDonald with a 3-2 victory.

“I thought about that loss almost every day for the past year, so this was sweet,” said Watt, who relished the opportunity to get a chance at redemption against McDonald. “I got a lead and he started to panic, which was what I thought would happen based on how he wrestled in some of the earlier rounds. It all worked out.”

Bonners Ferry’s Trevor Hampton had little problems dispatching Priest River’s Chris Pooley for the fifth time this season, 9-4, to win the 145-pound title.

“I knew it was important to get ahead early,” Hampton said. “He’s a good wrestler, but if he gets behind, I knew I would get a huge advantage in the mental part of the game — and that was the edge I needed to win.”

However, Priest River, which finished tied for eighth with 98 points, didn’t go home empty handed as it had two wrestlers win individual titles.

Priest River senior James Hegge cruised past Sugar-Salem’s Garrett Wood, 8-3, for the state title in the 130-pound weight class.

“I just played smart and never went to my back,” said Hegge, who placed in three previous trips to state but had never finished higher than third. “All that hard work finally paid off. (Wood) was a sophomore, but I’m a senior and this was it. There were no more chances after this, so I knew I needed to make the most of it.”

Priest River senior Cody Rabidue won state in the 160-pound weight class with a stunning first period pin of Fruitland’s Daulton Blackwell.

“I was mentally preparing myself for a tough three-round match,” Rabidue said. “But I had an opportunity for the pin and went for it. I was pretty surprised it ended so quickly.”

In the 2A tournament, Kootenai’s Ty Beare scored a late pin in the first period over West Jefferson’s Lucas Pancheri to win the 285-pound title.
