USDA - Forest Service Idaho Panhandle National Forests Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District Kootenai and Shoshone Counties, Idaho Kimberly Johnson, Acting District Ranger for the Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests, has announced her decision to implement precommercial thinning and pruning activities on 548 acres of immature mixed conifer stands. The project would initiate treatments to manage stock density and promote tree health. The stands to be treated were created through planting and/or natural regeneration of harvested sites that are 15 to 30 years old. These stands have become overstocked due to in-growth of trees. This action will reduce stock density and will increase stand resiliency and decrease susceptibility to insect and disease in long-lived, early seral components (western larch, ponderosa pine, and white pine). The Forest Service, Idaho Panhandle National Forests, Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District, has made an assessment that these activities fall within categories of actions listed in the Code of Federal Regulations (36 CFR 220.6(e)(6)) that are excluded from documentation in an Environmental Assessment (EA) or Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and that no extraordinary circumstances exist that would preclude use of this category (timber stand and/or wildlife habitat improvement activities which do not include the use of herbicides or do not require more the one mile of low standard road construction). This Decision is not subject to appeal pursuant to CFR 215.12(f).
