McEUEN: Feds set bad precedent

| February 23, 2011 9:00 PM

It comes as no surprise that the onerous and arrogant attitudes and policies of our federal government wouldn't take long to trickle down to our local governments. I am speaking in regard to the proposed radical changes of McEuen Field and Third Street Launch. Recent remarks made by Mayor Bloem and some city council members would lead the voting citizens of this community to believe that this local government is increasingly acting more like a monarchy rather than a republic. This is just another affirmation of the abridgment of our liberties, rights, and public access.

Coeur d'Alene is a desirable destination because of its beauty, recreational access and its wholesome small town appeal that it has on people, not for its botanical gardens and unicorn rides. McEuen Field and Third Street Launch are one of the last iconic places in this town that reflects that feel. Let us not forget the monetary impact of the initial cost as well as the residual cost of maintenance and upkeep for years to come. This ill-conceived idea could not have come at a worse time when our communities and households are struggling with budget shortfalls. Some people are proposing to burden the taxpayer again.

Collectively let us not be irresponsible with the natural resources that have made this community successful. Some things are better left unchanged!
