Idaho gas prices up 14 cents in past two weeks

Idaho's average price for a gallon of regular grade gasoline has soared 14 cents in a little more than the past two weeks, suggesting the Gem State's 10-week respite of lower priced fuel may be coming to an end, according to AAA Idaho.

On Friday, Idaho's average price was $3.10, up 14 cents since Feb. 2. The U.S. average price is still higher, at $3.16, but it's up just a nickel during the same period, AAA said.

Idaho might have enjoyed a holiday break following an expensive 2011, AAA said. "After a pricey 2010 when Idahoans paid 13 cents a gallon more on average than their U.S. counterparts, the places switched the first week in December 2011," said AAA Idaho spokesman Dave Carlson.

That's when the U.S. average price moved past Idaho's $2.93 average, on the way to about the $3.10 mark by the third week in January.

Until the last week in January, motorists in eastern Idaho enjoyed prices well below those in the western part of the state. For example, on Jan. 10, Pocatello's average price for regular grade gasoline was $2.76, compared to Boise's $2.92 per gallon mark. Today, Pocatello's average price is $3.08.

Friday's analysis of fuel prices among six Idaho cities shows that Coeur d'Alene motorists are paying $2.95 for a gallon of regular grade gasoline, 20 cents lower than Nampa's $3.15 average.

A week ago, Coeur d'Alene was at $2.94 a gallon. A month ago it was at $2.96 a gallon.

The travel organization said that while oil prices are unseasonably high for this time of year, there have been no sustained increases since Dec. 1. During that period, West Texas Intermediate oil has traded between $84 and about $92 a barrel. On Friday, it was trading at $86 a barrel.
