LAUNCH: Features make it irreplaceable
Apparently the present City Council does not realize that the Third Street boat launch is the premier launch in all North Idaho. No other boat launch even comes close to providing equal amenities. The launch has a gentle approach to the water and can accommodate the launching of four boats at a time. A fueling station is nearby and it is centrally located on the lake.
Because of its location it is considered to be a secure area to park your vehicles. It would be advantageous to construct additional parking by enlarging the present parking area. Additional parking could be provided south of the present City Hall at very little cost. After a day of boating, those returning to the launch area have access to fine restaurants and convenient shopping. The boat launch is located on property worth several million dollars.
Construction costs to duplicate the present launch would cost several million dollars. But on the bright side, the public already owns it and I would hope the City Council could be made aware of what a jewel they have. To tear out the launch and turn the site into a wading pool is absolutely ludicrous. We already have a place to soak your feet at Independence Point and 2,000 feet of beach near the city park.
The City Council was remiss in their duties when they hired "Team McEuen" and failed to give them instructions to enhance the launch area in their plan and not eliminate it. During these difficult times of unemployment, foreclosure and soup kitchens the City Council is operating like they are oblivious to what a lot of people are facing. Why not table any changes to McEuen Field until some later date? Any changes to the Third Street launch are so paramount that a vote from the public should decide the outcome of the launch. This launch is not used only by the citizens of Coeur d'Alene, but all of people in the surrounding area.
There must be some hidden agenda that is the driving force for removal of the launch area. I know that all members of the council are dedicated, intelligent individuals and the public has put their trust in them. However, I would hope that they would have the tenacity to become individuals who are true to their convictions and stand up for what's right.
I hope that Ron Edinger will decide to run for another term. He adds a lot to the council meetings and stands up for what he believes in. The City Council does a great job as a whole and has promoted some great projects, but the Third Street launch is very special to all of us.
