ELKS HOOP SHOOT
Hoop Shoot participants representing the Coeur d'Alene Elks Lodge have enjoyed a great deal of success advancing to the state competition the last seven years. But that is usually where things hit a hurdle.
At Saturday's State Hoop Shoot in Kellogg, four students from the Coeur d'Alene area competed against the best in the state with three advancing to the regional competition at Clark College in Vancouver, Wash., on March 5.
"We've had some great kids compete for us in the seven years I have been associated with the Hoop Shoot in Coeur d'Alene," said Rick Alexander, the Lodge's Hoop Shoot Director. "We have dominated the district championships in those years but our kids could never get out of the state tournament. It was a long dry spell for us but the kids sure did break that in a big way."
The state champions from Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Idaho will compete at the Regional Shoot Off with the winners advancing to the national championships at the Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass., in April.
Dylan Bengtson was matched shot for shot with Boise's Jevin Dalling in the boys' 8-9 year-old age group. Both boys, shooting in the third and fifth positions, led the way after the first round, sinking nine of their 10 shots.
In the second round, Bengtson set the pace, hitting 12 of 15 shots to post a score of 21 out of 25. Dalling looked like he was going to surpass that mark, but missed two shots toward the end of the round to put a potential win in jeopardy. Dalling sank his last shot to tie the score at 21 and force a five shot tiebreaker. Bengston sank all five of his shots in the tiebreaker. Dalling hit his first round shots in the extra round before watching his final effort bounce around the rim and fall harmlessly to the court.
Brayden Wells, representing the Moscow Lodge, took third with a score of 20.
On the girls half of the draw, Coeur d'Alene was represented by Marlee Lambert. The 9-year-old had little difficulty winning the local and district competitions last month. Things were a little more difficult at the state championships.
Lambert shot seven out of 10 to lead after the first round, but lost her rhythm in the second round and finished with a score of 14 out of 25. That put her in a tie for second place with Blackfoot's Abbie Tew. In the tiebreaker, Lambert led off and made just two of her five shots while Tew was perfect in the extra round to take the second-place trophy.
Gooding's Kodi Green took first place with a score of 15.
Coeur d'Alene was represented in the girls' 10-11 age group by Samantha Swayze. This marked Swayze's second consecutive trip to state, having finished fourth in the 8-9 year-old division last year in Mountain Home.
The second time was the charm for Swayze. The 10-year-old from Hayden nailed all 10 of her first round shots to take a commanding lead. Katie Holder of St. Maries used a strong second round to make things interesting, finishing with 18 points.
Swayze, needing nine shots in the second round to win, hit another 10 to finish with a score of 20 out of 25.
Caitlin Stukel of Boise finished third with 14 out of 25.
Julia Roach was in a loaded field in the girls' 12-13 year-old age group. Included in the competition was Gooding's Regan Harr, the 2009 Hoop Shoot national champion in the 10-11 age group.
That didn't seem to bother Roach, in her final year of eligibility. Roach competed in her school hoop shoots over the years but never made it to the local hoop shoot until this year. She has wasted little time in making up for her prior disappointments.
Roach made nine of her 10 shots in the first round to take an early lead and never let it go. She finished with a top score of 21 of 25. Blackfoot's Ashley Sanders made 18 shots to take second with Harr finishing a distant third, posting a score of 15.
Gooding's Jonas Nauman won the boys' 10-11 age group with a score of 23 out of 25 and Casey Hoggarth, also of Gooding, won the boys' 12-13 age group with a score of 20 out of 25.
Davis Bourgard of Post Falls had won the right to represent Coeur d'Alene in the State Shoot Out in the 10-11 age group, but was unable to make it due to a previous commitment.
SWIMMING
A total of 39 swimmers from the Coeur d'Alene Area Swim Team traveled to Clarkston, Wash., for the Inland Empire 14-and-under championships last weekend.
More than 250 athletes representing 13 teams competed, and CAST took home the second-place trophy with 724 points, behind the Spokane Waves' 927.
Three CAST swimmers earned individual high point honors: Caleb Markowski for the 8 and under boys, Katie Yost for the 9-10 year-old girls, and Gabe Markowski for the 9-10 year old boys.
The relay team of Danielle Chastain, Louie de Tar, Kathryn Moon and Katie Yost set a meet record in the 200 medley relay; and Danielle, Kathryn, Katie, and Katy Gribbin teamed up for another meet record in the 200 freestyle relay.
Cheyenne Helms, Courtney Helms, Micah Hudlet and Sarah McNeil combined for yet another meet record in the 400 freestyle relay. One of the most remarkable swims was the relay team consisting of Tristan Whiting, Matt Chastain, Mike Forster and 6-year-old Isaiah Hudlet, who swam to a fourth-place finish despite most of the competition being twice as old as Isaiah.
CAST will host the Inland Empire Short Course Championships on Feb. 25-27 at the Kroc Center. Swimmers must meet a qualifying time in order to compete.
