REFORM: See bills for yourselves

| February 16, 2011 9:00 PM

Our children will suffer as a result of Superintendent Tom Luna's plan, ironically titled Students Come First. As parents of children who attend Betty Kiefer Elementary, we were mortified by learning the direct impact within the Lakeland School District as a result of this plan. Furthermore, after researching the plan, we were even more disheartened with the wordsmithing used by Superintendent Luna. It is as if he felt that he could trick us into believing that this would benefit our children. Never have we heard of a governor or superintendent of public instruction propose that increases in class size would improve student performance or in any way put students first.

You are urged to visit the Idaho State Dept. of Education's website (sde.idaho.gov) to review this horrific plan yourself. The proposed plan demonstrates malice toward our teachers and does not provide any research to prove these changes would be BENEFICIAL TO OUR CHILDREN, OUR FUTURE. Educational budget cuts are inevitable, but we would like to encourage everyone to get involved in proposing alternatives for this budget shortfall. Please contact your local legislators by phone, written letter or e-mail and encourage them to take an honest look at what would be the reality of Superintendent Luna's plan. Time is of the essence as these plans will soon be making their way through the Senate.
