Lakeland loses in title game

MOSCOW - Moscow pulled away late in the first quarter and early in the second quarter en route to a 62-42 victory over Lakeland in the winner-take-all championship game of the 4A Region 1 girls basketball tournament Thursday night at Bear Den.

"It's pretty disappointing, knowing that you had two championship games," said Lakeland coach Steve Seymour, whose squad lost 39-31 to the Bears on Tuesday. "But both had to be played on Moscow's floor. Moscow executed better at the end of the season ... we worked really hard, and it's a good group of kids. Our shots just didn't fall, plain and simple."

Taylor Anderson scored 20 points, Abi Quinnett 14 for Moscow (9-15), which advances to state Feb. 17-19 at Timberline High in Boise. The Bears will open against District 3 runner-up Bishop Kelly (14-9) of Boise next Thursday at 2 p.m. PST.

Cieana Close scored 12 points for Lakeland, which finished 12-12. Shelby Coder had six rebounds and Darby Murray had five rebounds, five steals and five assists.

"It was another game where I bet we had seven or eight point-blankers that came up blank," said Seymour, whose Hawks won 48-45 in Moscow last week in the semifinals.
