Daniel joined the Navy in 1958 and served 22 years. Upon retiring from the U.S. Navy, he and his wife Sherin moved to Colburn where they partnered with Sherin's sister and her husband in operating a cafe in Colburn. They then moved to the Coeur d'Alene area where he worked for the cities of Sandpoint and Post Falls.

He married his wife, Sherin Morris (Diehl), on May 20, 1961, in Buchanan, Mich. They had two sons, Michael and Greg. Michael and Denise live in Sandpoint with their children Sterling, Katelyn and Taylor. Greg and his best friend, Connie, live in Atlanta, Ga. Daniel is also survived by his brother, Robert, and wife Norma Diehl in Newtroy, Mich.

Daniel is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Beck (Diehl); father Daniel V. Diehl Sr.; brother James Diehl and sister Mary Kay Westgate (Diehl).

Daniel was an active member of Water Environment Federation. He enjoyed fishing with Sherin's brother Pat. Dan and Sherin's sons, Mike and Greg, loved to ride motorcycles with their dad. Woodworking was also an interest. Jim Taccogna, a dear friend and working partner at the Post Falls Filtration plant recalls Dan as a devoted co-worker, mentoring him through many emergencies. Dan, on a daily basis, was the first person at work and the last one to leave.

A celebration of life for Daniel will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, at Coeur d'Alene Assembly of God for family and friends. A lunch will be served immediately following the service.
