Ringing in the ears

What causes ringing in the ears and how can I make it go away?

Ringing in the ears or the official term "Tinnitus" is a condition in which a person hears sound that is not actually in the environment. The actual cause of tinnitus is still unknown. But we do know that it arises from some kind of damage in the auditory or neural system. The single greatest risk associated with tinnitus comes from working in noise. Tinnitus or ringing in the ears is a very common problem. Just about anything that can cause hearing loss can also cause the symptom of ringing in the ears. Tinnitus can have many different sounds. Some people say it sounds like a steady tone, hissing, buzzing or crickets.

Ringing in the ears should not cause you to lose sleep, interfere with concentration or affect the quality of your life. If your tinnitus is really bothersome, this new technology might well offer some relief. This new sound therapy platform uses customized tones, pitch-matched to a person's unique tinnitus and has been shown to offer the potential of both short-term and long-term relief. I now have something I can help people with instead of telling them that "You have to live with it, try to ignore it or mask it with the radio or TV." In extreme cases I have been able to fit people with a tinnitus masker. A tinnitus masker looks like a hearing aid but emits masking sounds which was able to help some people.

I have always shied patients away from non-medically proven tinnitus treatments advertised in magazines and TV such as magical pills, magical ear drops or magical supplements. These large ads and gimmicks tend to rob people of their money. The nice thing about sound therapy is that it is non-invasive and can provide real relief (proven by scientific research) to tinnitus sufferers. This new sound therapy is programmed and customized to match the pitch of your own personal tinnitus to provide the most benefit. If you or someone you know feels like their tinnitus is taking over their life they should be evaluated to see if sound therapy can work for them.

I will be offering a "Tinnitus Workshop" in January. Please call for a reservation if you would like to learn more about sound therapy and what we can offer you to give you some relief from the ringing in your ears.

Dr. Tia Flynn is a certified audiologist and has been in business for more than 11 years. Every Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. to noon, Dr. Flynn provides free hearing screenings at 1601 Third St. in Coeur d'Alene. Information: (208) 664-2767
