RENT: A play with a simple message
I am always surprised when I read such judgmental rhetoric as contained in Arcadia Nicklay's recent letter to the editor regarding the production of "RENT" at Lake City Playhouse. I continually try to make myself believe that in modern society, these people don't exist - that this kind of hate and bigotry has become extinct. That's the idealist in me.
All right, on with the reality check. First of all, theater is entertainment. It does not necessarily represent all of the patronage. Ms. Nicklay has the right to not attend this particular show. She has the right to hate and judge the LGBT community. She does not, however, have the right to dictate what art forms are acceptable to an entire community. For every person who shares her opinion, there are probably 100 who don't.
This is a beautiful piece of theater with a simple message. Love each other.
