| December 8, 2011 8:15 PM

COEUR d'ALENE - Before you can count birds, you've got to know them.

That's why Kris Buchler will present "Prepping for the Christmas Count," at 7 p.m. Dec. 13 at Lutheran Church of the Master, 4800 N. Ramsey Road.

The program is billed as "a quick bird identification review concentrating on those troublesome species, some rarities to look for and a basic course on gulls."

The Audobon Society will have three Christmas bird counts in this area. There is a $5 fee, plus each person pays a share for gas. Sign up by calling Shirley Sturts at 664-5318.

The first will be in Coeur d'Alene on Dec. 17. Teams will head out at 7 a.m., following a 6 a.m. breakfast at Michael D's Eatery.

The Indian Mountain count is set for Jan. 2. Again, there will be teams heading out that morning.

The Spirit Lake CBC is scheduled Jan. 5. Meet for breakfast at 6:15 a.m. at Rustler's Roost in Hayden, then venture out with a team of counters.

A Mica Bay bird survey is scheduled Dec. 13. Meet at Fairmont Loop and U.S. 95 at 9 a.m. Participants will spend about two to three hours counting birds. Beginners welcome.
