Hawks' Metcalf nearly perfect

| April 24, 2011 9:00 PM

RATHDRUM - Ashley Metcalf struck out 10 in the first game and was one strike away from a perfect game in the second as the Hawks swept the Bears 2-0 and 11-0 in a 4A Inland Empire League doubleheader Saturday at Stub Meyer Park.

"It was a great day," Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said. "We had to come out early and work on our field, then ended up having to move the game."

In the first game, Lakeland scored on a throwing error in the third inning and added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Josie Coder to score Dani Westling.

Metcalf struck out five in the second game and walked the lone baserunner on a full count with two outs in the fifth inning for Lakeland (5-6, 4-0 4A IEL), which hosts Sandpoint on Monday.

Post Falls 2-1

POST FALLS - Lunden Young's two-run single in the top of the seventh inning of the first game snapped a 2-all tie and triggered a four-run inning for the visiting Bengals, who went on to sweep the Trojans in 5A Inland Empire League play.

Post Falls (4-11, 0-7 5A IEL) left 11 runners on base in the opener. Even more painful for the Trojans - sophomore left-handed pitcher Rachel Collins was struck in the ribs by a line drive in the third inning. Impressively, she was able to reach down, pick up the ball and throw it to first for the out.

She finished the game, then went to the hospital for X-rays.

"I tell you what, she's a tough kid - she wanted to throw the second game," Post Falls coach Jack Foster said. "I said no, we're not going to take any chances."

Foster said Collins was diagnosed with bruised ribs, but has been cleared to play. Post Falls next plays at Lake City on Tuesday in the "Save 2nd Base" game for breast cancer awareness.

Post Falls' No. 2 pitcher, sophomre Kendyl Henderson, suffered a knee injury in practice last Wednesday and is out for two weeks. Foster had high praise for junior Kendal Floch, who pitched the second game despite never having pitched in a game before.

Young hit a two-run homer in the third inning of the second game for Lewiston (12-5, 5-3), and Shaundee Garrett went 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs.
