Atilano's to open on Appleway

Requests from North Idaho people for an Atilano's Mexican Food from Spokane to come this way are being granted.

Billed as fast-food but affordable and genuine, Atilano's will open in mid-May in the former KFC building at 218 E. Appleway. The fare includes 14-inch burritos, breakfast burritos, tacos, tortas, nachos, enchiladas and tostadas. Open 24 hours with a drive-through, the order-at-the-counter place includes 11 booths (one a family-size for nine people) and three tables.

Owner Atilano Gonzales said he drove around the region and couldn't find an authentic Mexican fast-food restaurant. Coming from Mexico last year, he started the first Atilano's at Third and Post in Spokane and then got requests to come to Idaho.

Combination meals are under $7 and many items are under $3.

"Don't let the prices fool you," he said. "The burritos are made with 14-inch tortillas and stuffed with fresh ingredients until they're plump. You need both hands and a healthy appetite to eat one."

Atilano's also has veggie items, special sides and a salsa bar. It will have about 10 employees.

Watch for opening day with half prices and a mariachi band.

Mix It Up moves to Sherman

An amazing variety of home and garden decor, gifts, cards - many special artistic imports - are available at Mix It Up, which will open May 2 in its new location at 513 Sherman Ave., which formerly had the Cd'A Golf Shop. The store's space will triple from 907 to 2,600 square feet, allowing for more and larger items, such as furniture.

Many items are "green," made from recycled materials, and many are "fair-trade" imports.

"Our theme is green living as much as possible," said owner Jan Carr, who started Mix It Up in the Parkside Condominium building on Front Avenue two years ago. In the business world for 20 years, she previously was a buyer for Nordstrom's and had the One More Thing store in downtown Coeur d'Alene.

"We grew 31 percent last year," she said in explaining the need for a larger space. "We have beautiful items to create an interesting living style, things to start a conversation."

With three employees, hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 to 4 Sundays. Phone 667-8603. Check www.mixituphome.com.

Something Special in Ironwood Square

About the most interesting, best-quality items you'd ever find in a garage or yard sale overfill the 1,900 square feet of Something Special, which has moved to Ironwood Square (between Rite Aid and Staples) in Coeur d'Alene.

With items from owner Deborah Wheeler, consignments and six vendors, the inventory includes new and used furniture, antiques, home decor, gifts, jewelry, cards, candles, art, toys and more. With five year's experience in the business, Wheeler moved the store from Seltice Way to the space formerly occupied by the Scrap Book store.

She welcomes more vendors.

Hours at Something Special start at 10 a.m. weekdays and are 10 to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Phone 704-8962.

Here's this

week's tidbits:

• Watch for details on the Ugly Fish restaurant coming into Riverstone.

• A clothing store called Wildflowers will go into the Parkside space that Mix It Up is leaving.

• The "bucks" term for money is shortened from "buckskins," which Native Americans traded for goods.

• A Subway, not a Denny's, is going into the Flying J truck stop west of Post Falls.

• Soon we'll have news on hot dog and pizza places coming to downtown Coeur d'Alene.

• Next week we'll tell about Relief Workers Massage Therapy Services.

• Two new businesses are coming into Silver Lake Mall. But evidently the mall honchos (who also have the job for Spokane Valley and Northtown malls) don't want free publicity as they don't return calls.

• Good Pickins thrift store on Fourth Street has closed.
