Argyll Leland Hollinshead, 96

| April 19, 2011 10:00 PM

Argyll Leland Hollinshead, known as "Holly" - the teller of tall tales, was born Sept. 5, 1914, to George and Harriet Hollinshead of Coeur d'Alene.

His first job was delivering the Coeur d'Alene Press to Dalton Gardens every Friday, and spending a nickel of his earnings on his favorite treat, a Hudson hamburger. He was graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School in 1933. After high school, he joined the CCC, followed by service in the Idaho National Guard. After his training was completed, he returned home to work for the state, helping to build Northwest Boulevard. He was then assigned to Farragut, taking fingerprints during the construction of the Naval Base.

In July 1942, he began a 30-year career with the U.S. Forest Service. After retirement, he moved to Atlas Road and became a rock hound. He cut a lot of rocks, polished and mounted gem stones and received a lot of awards. After losing his love of more than 66 years, his wife Susie, he took it easy and returned to his real passion of photography. When he was younger, he developed photos in a dark room in his basement.

In recent years, he had a computer and discovered digital photography. He took thousands of pictures of everything up until March 9, 2011, when he suffered a mild heart attack, and ended up in the hospital for three days, followed by three weeks in a nursing home. He was looking forward to going home when he had another emergency which took his life on Sunday morning, April 10, 2011.

He is survived by one daughter, Vicki Hollinshead of Olympia, Wash.; eight grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind several very special people: Duncan, Cheri, Merland, Loretta, Dale, Jerry, Dar and his family, and most importantly, Jane. All of them will miss "Holly" very much.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Susie, daughter Donna, three brothers and five sisters.

At his request, no services will be held.
