NIC coach Phay in running for L-C State men's hoop job

LEWISTON - North Idaho College men's basketball coach Jared Phay is one of three finalists for the vacant men's basketball coaching job at NAIA Lewis-Clark State College.

The others are George Pfeifer, former L-C State coach, and Kevin Burton, head coach at NAIA Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn.

Phay has been head coach at NIC the past seven seasons, with an overall record of 149-70. He has posted six straight winning seasons; NIC went 23-9 this year.

Pfeifer coached at L-C State from 1989-2005, then coached at Idaho for two seasons and at Montana State-Billings for three seasons. He was fired by both Idaho and Montana State-Billings.

Burton is 138-74 in seven seasons at Lambuth, and has led the Eagles to the national tournament three times. Lambuth is also reportedly closing June 30.

The new hire will replace Tim Walker, who resigned in March after six seasons.

Eagles bowling

tourney ready to roll

COEUR d'ALENE - The second Inland Empire Eagles Bowling Tournament will be held April 23-May 1 at the Sunset Bowling Center.

This year's tournament is co-sponsored by the Best Western Plus Coeur d'Alene Inn and Mulligan's Grille & Bar.

"Many frequent guests of Mulligan's are Eagles or friends of Eagles and this just seemed a natural fit for us," said Steve Wilson, general manager.

Bowlers from Moscow, Pullman, Tri-Cities, Orofino, Grangeville, Spokane and St. Maries will be participating, said Gary Wilkinson, event organizer.

Teams are comprised of men or women or mixed, and only two of four team members need be Eagles. Wilkinson is expecting 120 to 140 bowlers.

Lewiston High standout Fuller to play basketball at L-C State

LEWISTON - Lewiston High senior Tanis Fuller, who in February helped the Bengals capture their first state girls basketball title since 1976, has signed a letter-of-intent to play at Lewis-Clark State College next year, Warriors coach Brian Orr announced.

Fuller, who was named to the all-Idaho 5A girls first team by the Idaho Statesman newspaper of Boise, averaged 12.4 points per game. The 5-foot-10 guard/forward led Lewiston to a 22-3 record.

Fuller said she also received a full-ride offer to North Idaho College.

Cd'A participants earn honors at '24 Hours of Schweitzer'

SANDPOINT - A team from Coeur d'Alene took first place in the four-person team division at the third annual "24 Hours of Schweitzer" ski relay, held April 1-2 at Schweitzer Mountain Resort.

Team The Wolf Pack, which included Jeremy Deming, Mary Dickson, Christine Greene and Hannah Palmer, completed a total of 441 runs.

More than 120 skiers and snowboarders of all ages braved the elements at the all-day, all-night event, held in honor of 4-year-old Hank Sturgis of Sandpoint, who has the rare, fatal disease cystinosis that affects only 500 people in the entire country. Together, the events raised a record $90,000 toward a cure for the disease.

Skiers, telemarkers and snowboarders ranging in age from four to 69 raised pledges before hitting the slopes to see how many runs they could ski or board in 24 hours straight, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on April 1 and ending at 8:30 a.m. on April 2. Participants rallied all day and through the night to log 9,561 runs, or nearly 10,247,310 vertical feet, with help from Schweitzer crews and event volunteers who worked around the clock.

Two-time defending champion Matt Gillis of Sandpoint set another new record, skiing 202 runs or 201,582 vertical feet in 24 hours straight and beating last year's performance by six runs. He also individually raised more than $16,000 in pledges, earning honors as the event's top fundraiser.

"24 Hours of Schweitzer" benefits 24 Hours for Hank, a local nonprofit foundation established to help find a cure for this extremely rare, genetic disease that eventually destroys the organs in the body including the kidneys, liver, eyes, muscles and brain. To date, the foundation has raised more than $300,000 toward cystinosis research in just 2 1/2 years.

Donations are still being accepted and can be made online or via the mail.
