Lake City wins, but Lakeland ends run of shutouts

RATHDRUM - The visiting Lake City Timberwolves allowed their first runs of the season, but still improved to 7-0 with a 7-2 win over the Lakeland Hawks on Tuesday.

Erin Ogden, who entered the game in the top of the first when the Hawks' starting centerfielder was injured, homered over the center field fence leading off the bottom of the first for Lakeland (2-5).

Lake City sophomore Casey Stangel came into the game with six straight shutouts, and 38 consecutive shutout innings. She finished with 13 strikeouts, two walks and two hit batters.

Vanessa Shippy went 3 for 4 and scored two runs for Lake City, and Dakota Wilson hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

Lake City plays host to Post Falls today at 4. Lakeland is home against Sandpoint in a doubleheader on Thursday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Jessica Ball went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored as the Vikings defeated the Trojans in a 5A Inland Empire League game at Larry Schwenke Field.

“We were really hitting the ball well today,” Coeur d’Alene coach Larry Bieber said. “It was good to get out on a nice day. We worked so hard on the field getting it ready, we almost had to water it.”

Kendal Floch and Kendyl Henderson had RBI doubles in the fifth inning for Post Falls (2-8, 0-4 5A IEL), which hosts Lake City today.

Chelsey Rasmussen and Hailey Petit also had two hits for Coeur d’Alene (8-3, 2-3), which travels to Post Falls on Friday.

BONNERS FERRY — Sophomore Jenna Hoffman hit a two-run home run in a nine-run second inning as the Tigers defeated the Badgers in their Intermountain League opener.

“We did a good job of hitting the ball today,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “Nicole (Cameron) did a good job of controlling the game.”

Cameron had six strikeouts and Kodi Kuykendall, Sydnie Malloy and Ashlei Jerome had two hits apiece for Timberlake (3-3), which travels to Lakeland on Friday.
