Metcalf, Herndon lift Post Falls

POST FALLS - Darnell Metcalf drove in four runs in the first game, and Tyson Herndon drove in the go-ahead run and picked up the win on the mound in the nightcap, as Post Falls swept Sandpoint 9-4 and 5-4 in a nonleague doubleheader Saturday.

Metcalf finished with six RBIs on the day for Post Falls (3-2). He broke the first game open with a three-run double in the third inning, increasing the Trojans' lead to 7-3.

Riley Denney struck out seven in four innings and Jordan Quast fanned five in three innings for Post Falls. However, Trojan pitchers also walked 10 Bulldogs in each game and hit three of them in the second game.

Dereck Lang hit a three-run homer in the first inning for Sandpoint (0-5), and Tyler Gordon added a solo shot in the seventh.

In the second game, Jackson Olin hit a two-run single in the fifth inning for Sandpoint to tie it at 4.

In the bottom of the inning, Herndon singled in Zach Carter with two out for the go-ahead run.

"We're battling back, not giving up," Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said. "And we're putting the ball in play."

Sandpoint plays host to Lakeland in a doubleheader on Monday.

Zack Reeder scored five runs on the day for Post Falls, which travels to Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday.

COEUR d'ALENE - Senior Emmitt Stangel had three RBIs for the Timberwolves in the first game of a nonleague doubleheader sweep of the Bears.

Pete Hoffman had six strikeouts in the first game for Lake City in a complete-game win.

"Pete did a good job of letting them put the ball in play," Lake City coach Al Bevacqua said. "Our defense came in and supported him and played really well."

In the second game, Hoffman had three RBIs and Grant Curtis struck out seven for Lake City.

"Grant pitched very, very well," Bevacqua said. "We were able to get a lot of hits and started off on fire in the second game."

Lake City (4-3) hosts Lakeland in a doubleheader on Tuesday.

ST. MARIES - Spartan pitcher Kyle Bradbury struck out 13 and had four hits as the Spartans took the first game from the Lumberjacks in the Intermountain League opener for both teams at St. Maries City Park.

Priest River had its 1 through 4 hitters go 11 of 13 from the plate in the opening game.

"When we face Bradbury, the margin for error isn't much," St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. "I thought we pitched well enough to win, but we need to do a better job against him the next time."

St. Maries (1-4) took the second game as Bubba Pugh drew a bases-loaded walk with one out in the seventh inning to bring in the winning run.

"We were just unable to get hits against them, but we made some incredible plays," Tefft said. "It was a typical game for us against them over the past three years. We were pretty fortunate to split with them today."

St. Maries will host Bonners Ferry in a makeup game on Monday.

Priest River (4-2) travels to Kellogg on Tuesday.

BONNERS FERRY - Senior catcher Alek Lopez had six hits on the day as the Badgers swept the Wildcats in the IML-opening doubleheader for both teams at Bonners Ferry High.

In the first game, Lopez went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and four runs scored, scoring on a throwing error with none out to win the first game.

Ryan Beggerly went 2 for 4 in the first game for Kellogg.

Josiah Owinyo struck out nine in four innings and Dan Mayzel fanned seven in three hitless innings for the Badgers in the second game.

Bonners Ferry (2-5) travels to St. Maries for a makeup game on Monday.
