Lakeland sweeps at Moscow

| April 10, 2011 9:00 PM

MOSCOW - Sophomore Lauren Schwalbach hit a two-run single in the sixth inning of the first game to give the Lakeland Hawks the lead for good as they defeated the Moscow Bears 6-4 and 9-7 in the 4A Inland Empire League opener for both schools on Saturday at Ghormley Field.

Kristin Klopatek struck out 11 in the first game for Lakeland.

In the second game, Klopatek hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning as the Hawks scored six runs in the top of the seventh to rally for the doubleheader sweep.

"We really came out and battled today," Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said. "We played well as a team and worked together and made things happen when we needed to. It was exciting to get two on the road against Moscow."

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Lakeland center fielder Bekah Kastning robbed Deven Chandler of a two-run home run, which would have tied the game.

"She caught the ball and tumbled over the fence, but kept the ball in her hands," Bevacqua said. "It was literally an ESPN kind of moment."
