Hout, Boise State to be

featured on SI cover

Former Lake City High standout Byron Hout has made the cover of Sports Illustrated.

So have a few of his teammates.

The third-ranked Broncos will be featured on the national cover of the magazine this week.

The Idaho Statesman said SI writer Austin Murphy spent much of last week in Boise to report and write a story about whether the Broncos should be eligible to play for the BCS national championship. Two photographers shot the Boise State-Oregon State game on Saturday night.

The cover shows Hout, a junior linebacker, and several other players running onto the field.

Boise State was on a regional cover of Sports Illustrated’s college football preview in August, but this is the school’s first national cover. It hits news stands today.

Boise State’s game against Oregon State also drew ESPN’s “College GameDay” show to Boise for the first time on Saturday.

Vandal boosters to

meet Thursday at Resort

University of Idaho president M. Duane Nellis and Mrs. Ruthie Nellis will be the featured speakers at the Kootenai County Vandal Booster luncheon on Thursday at the Coeur d’Alene Resort’s Shore Lounge.

The luncheon will run from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. and costs $9, which includes validated parking.

Shock adds to

2011 roster

The Spokane Shock announced on Friday that Antwan Marsh, Khreem Smith, Josh Ferguson, Nygel Rogers, Francis Maka and Rucshard Dodd-Masters have been added to the 2011 roster.

Marsh, 6-3, 220, is the eighth member of the 2010 ArenaBowl Champion Shock to return to Spokane. Marsh, a linebacker, tallied 29.5 tackles with four interceptions and three pass break-ups.

Smith, 6-4, 270, posted a career-high nine sacks as a member of the Milwaukee Iron. A lineman, Smith is also a veteran of the NFL, playing for both the Kansas City Chiefs (2007) and Minnesota Vikings (2006) during the regular season.

Ferguson, 5-7, 180, spent his rookie season with the Chicago Rush last season. Ferguson, a defensive back, led the team with 99 tackles, 9 interceptions and 21 pass break-ups.

Rogers, 6-1, 203, was also a member of the Rush last season. Rodgers, also a defensive back, was a member of the Shock from 2007-08.

Maka, 6-2, 255, had 2.5 sacks in two seasons on the defensive line at Hawaii.

Dodd-Maters, 6-0, 190, recorded 63 tackles and 2 interceptions in 14 games in 2009 as a defensive back for Stockton and Central Valley.

Spokane also added wide receiver Dudley Guice to their roster on Tuesday.

Guice, 6-3, 215, signed with the Indianapolis Colts earlier this year, but was released just before the start of the regular season. In 2009, Guise signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans out of Northwestern State.
