Post Falls blanks Sandpoint; Gomez wins again

BOYS SOCCER

Cole Jesienouski and Timmy Mueller scored first-half goals to lead the Post Falls Trojans past the Sandpoint Bulldogs 3-0 on Saturday.

"I thought it was one of our best all-around performances of the season today," Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. "Scott (Benner) was incredible again today on defense, and so were Cole and Timmy. Everyone took what they did against Coeur d'Alene and stepped it up a notch."

Conner Kenna scored in the 80th minute for Post Falls (9-1-1), which hosts Lake City on Tuesday.

Kanyen Bauer had six saves for Sandpoint (8-5-1), which hosts Lakeland on Saturday.

Lake City 4, Lewiston 0: Evan Teichmann and Chris Wheelock connected on goals in the first four minutes as the host Timberwolves downed the Bengals in a 5A Inland Empire League match at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

"I thought we came out pretty good today," Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. "The game tightened a little bit, but we were able to get a few goals in the second half. We got a lot of guys time today and it was a good game overall."

Mason Sanchez had two unassisted goals in the second half for Lake City (7-2-1, 2-1 5A IEL), which travels to Post Falls on Tuesday.

Lewiston is now 4-7, 0-4.

"It was a good bounce-back match for us after Post Falls," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Lake said. "Jorge Villalobos had been hurt and came back for the first time since the first day of school and played some big minutes for us."

Villalobos had a goal and assist for Coeur d'Alene (8-2-1), which travels to Lewiston on Tuesday.

Bonners Ferry 2, St. Maries 1: Alex Mendez scored on a penalty kick in the 31st minute as the host Badgers (9-3, 6-0 IML) defeated the Lumberjacks (2-7-3, 1-2-1) in an Intermountain League match.

"There was certainly some improvement today," St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. "We've had a long history of not beating them. They scored on a penalty kick and a breakaway goal. We outshot them 7-5 in the second half, but just couldn't get the tying goal."

Ryan Kennelly scored in the 77th minute for St. Maries, which travels to Lakeland on Tuesday.

Bonners Ferry 2, St. Maries 1: Liz Racer scored on an unassisted goal in the 46th minute to give the host Badgers (3-2-6, 3-2-3 IML) the Intermountain League win over the Lumberjacks (0-12-1, 0-7-1).

"It was a disappointing match to lose," St. Maries coach Paul Ebert said. "It was ours to win and we couldn't find the net. We really, really made some improvements in the passing game."

Chelsea Thaut had six saves for St. Maries, which hosts Orofino on Friday.

Post Falls 1, Mead 1: Lexi Smith finished off a give-and-go with Michelle Waller with a 23-yard shot over the keeper's head and in for the tying goal in the 76th minute of the nonleague game at Mead.

"We're happy with the tie," Post Falls coach Becky Thompson said. "Our girls played great. Our girls worked on a lot of defense and it showed. Stefanie Siers (center midfielder) played probably one of her best games, and Hannah Slinkard made a couple great saves at the end."

Post Falls (4-3-5), which tied for the third straight game, plays at Lake City on Tuesday.

Timberlake (7-3-2, 6-0-2 IML) hosts Priest River on Tuesday.

Gomez wins again: Kinsey Gomez won the girls 5,000-meter race in 18 minutes, 38.93 seconds at the Erik Anderson/Runners Soul Invitational at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane Valley.

In the boys race, David Norris of Coeur d'Alene finished second in 16:44.61.

Coeur d'Alene's boys and girls each took second.

VOLLEYBALL

Lewiston d. Sandpoint: Alex Bucholtz tallied 14 kills and three blocks, Sam Buratto 10 kills and five aces, Mackenzie Jones 21 assists and four aces and Blake Plaster 18 digs to lead Sandpoint, which lost a tough five-game match to visiting Lewiston 21-25, 26-28, 25-18, 25-21, 15-13 at Les Rogers Court.

The Bulldogs (4-4) led 10-5 in the decisive fifth game, before the Bengals (16-2) rallied for the win.

"I honestly feel like we're getting better," said Sandpoint coach Karen Alsager, whose team is now 1-3 in five-set matches. "The wins aren't showing it, but I feel we played together as a family tonight."

Sandpoint is at Lake City on Tuesday.

St. Maries wins two at Lakeland: Marlee Masterson had 13 kills as the Lumberjacks defeated the Hawks 25-17, 25-9, 25-10 in a nonleague match at Hawk Court in Rathdrum.

Jaylee Sines had 27 assists and Tia Asbury had 24 digs for St. Maries.

Kaitlyn Whitesitt had seven kills and four blocks, Erin Ogden had 9 digs and Sonora Wilkes had 12 assists.

Masterson had 23 kills and Sines 39 assists as the Lumberjacks defeated Riverside 25-20, 25-16, 25-18 in a nonleague match.

Asbury had 20 digs and Mariah Gladden had five blocks for St. Maries (14-2), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

Earlier, Wilkes had nine assists, Ogden and Sharon Gardner had four digs apiece for Lakeland in a 25-15, 25-12, 25-19 loss to Riverside.

Lakeland plays host to Moscow on Tuesday.
