Fern B. Smail, 94, passed away peacefully at Pinewood Care Center on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010. She was born Sept. 9, 1916, in Coffee Creek, Mont.

She lived most of her life in Montana. She was married to Homer (Doc) M. Smail on Oct. 6, 1934. Homer preceded her in death in 1998. Fern worked hard as a farmer's wife and mother of two girls. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. After Homer and Fern retired they traveled extensively around the United States, finally settling in Hemet, Calif., in 1975.

She enjoyed writing about their travels. Fern was an avid Poet, and loved to write poetry. In 2001, she moved to North Idaho and lived at Heritage Place where she frequently played the piano for the residents. Many people will remember her constant companion, "Peachy," a peach-faced lovebird. She later moved to Coeur d'Alene Homes.

Fern loved to play the piano. She was a talented pianist, playing for community dances early in her marriage. A great deal of her music was played by ear. Being active in many community organizations, she played for Church, The Eagles, Rebekah Lodge and any organization that needed a good piano player.

Fern is survived by her brother, Dale Krumm of Kirkland, Wash.; her daughters, Phyllis Knox of Post Falls and Sandra Smail of Hayden; as well as her grandchildren, Shelly Quinton, Thane Hubbell, Stephanie Wiggins, Stacey Lopez and Therron Hubbell; eight great-grandchildren and numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2010, at Heritage Place Chapel, 702 W. Walnut Coeur d'Alene.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Hospice of North Idaho.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to all the caregivers and staff who have helped to make her last few years easier for her.
