Posada's HR launches Yankees back into first

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Jorge Posada led off the 10th inning with a pinch-hit homer, lifting the New York Yankees over the Tampa Bay Rays 8-7 and back into first place in the AL East on Tuesday night at St. Petersburg, Fla.

A night after Reid Brignac's 11th-inning homer gave Tampa Bay a 1-0 win and put the Rays atop the standings by one half-game, the Yankees regained the division lead.

Rangers 11, Tigers 4: At Arlington, Texas, David Murphy had a homer upheld on replay to help Texas beat Detroit.

Indians 4, Angels 3: Shelley Duncan hit two home runs and had four RBIs as host Cleveland beat Los Angeles.

Twins 9, White Sox 3: J.J. Hardy hit a go-ahead RBI double in the seventh, leading Minnesota at Chicago.

The AL Central-leading Twins increased their lead to seven games over the White Sox.

Royals 11, Athletics 3: Wilson Betemit homered and drove in four runs to help host Kansas City rout Oakland.

Orioles 11, Blue Jays 3: Nick Markakis and Adam Jones homered, and Baltimore beat visiting Toronto.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Nationals 6, Braves 0: Livan Hernandez pitched eight strong innings, leading Washington at Atlanta.

Dodgers 1, Giants 0: Barry Zito's winless streak reached 12 outings and visiting Los Angeles beat San Francisco.

Padres 7, Rockies 6: At Denver, Jon Garland threw seven sharp innings and San Diego beat Colorado to maintain its lead in the NL West.

Mets 9, Pirates 1: R.A. Dickey took a three-hitter into the ninth and New York routed visiting Pittsburgh.

Diamondbacks 3, Reds 1: Daniel Hudson pitched eight solid innings and Arizona won at Cincinnati.

Phillies 2, Marlins 1: At Miami, Cole Hamels had 13 strikeouts and Philadelphia increased its lead in the NL East to two games over Atlanta by beating Florida.

Cubs 7, Cardinals 2: Randy Wells allowed five hits over eight innings to help Chicago win at St Louis.

The Cardinals remained seven games behind NL Central-leading Cincinnati.

Astros 3, Brewers 2: Chris Johnson hit a three-run homer in the first and host Houston edged Milwaukee.
