Capital tops Lake City with big plays

| September 11, 2010 9:00 PM

FOOTBALL

BOISE - The Capital Eagles scored twice in the final minute of the first half to break open a close game and went on to beat the Lake City Timberwolves 32-7 in nonleague action Friday night at Bronco Stadium.

Riley Magner threw three touchdown passes and ran for one for Capital (2-0), ranked second in 5A.

"I thought we played harder than last week (a 27-20 loss to Mountain View)," Lake City coach Van Troxel said. "We gave up three big plays on long-yardage situations. If we would have played that hard last week, we would have won hands down."

Magner's 71-yard TD pass to Michael Howard with 1 minute left in the half increased the Eagles' lead to 13-0. Following a Lake City punt, Magner hit Corey Bell for 49 yards to the Lake City 7, then hit Jordan Storrs for a touchdown on the next play with 13 seconds left in the half for a 20-0 halftime lead.

Storrs ran 1 yard for Capital's first score in the first quarter.

Lake City (1-2) got on the board midway through the third quarter on Kaleb Mitchell's 2-yard run, cutting Capital's lead to 26-7.

Allen Carmichael rushed for 113 yards on 24 carries for Lake City, which had two turnovers and a handful of other miscues which stalled drives.

"The outcome wasn't what we wanted, but I feel better that we definitely played harder, and played with more intensity," Troxel said. "Now we've got to quit making mistakes on both sides of the ball."

Lake City is idle next week, then travels to Snohomish, Wash., on Sept. 25 to play Glacier Peak.
