Last-second pass sends St. Maries past Medical Lake

| September 4, 2010 9:00 PM

ST. MARIES - With clouds and lightning approaching on the horizon, the Lumberjacks found a little electricity of their own down the stretch.

A 25-yard pass between seniors Jaden Guidry and Brad Anderson with seven seconds left pulled St. Maries within a point of visiting Medical Lake. Then, Anderson's conversion run gave the hosts a 28-27 nonconference victory.

It was the first win for new coach Craig Tefft, and the Lumberjacks' first victory in quite some time as the team was winless in 2009.

"This was a much-needed win pyschologically for our kids," Tefft said. "We had an opening kickoff return for a score taken away by a penalty last week (in a 12-7 loss at Grangeville) or we could be 2-0. The kids responded well this week."

Down 14-0 at intermission, St. Maries (1-1) rallied behind Anderson's 132 yards on 20 carries. He also scored two rushing touchdowns, in addition to his TD reception.

"We pretty much dominated the third quarter - it was just the kids playing with more effort and intensity," Tefft added. "Then down the stretch, it was a barnburner."

St. Maries is home again next week, hosting Freeman.

SPIRIT LAKE - Jacob Bigs and Josh Davis connected for a pair of touchdowns as the Rams defeated the Tigers in a nonleague game.

The game was delayed for an hour and a half in the second quarter due to lightning in the area.

"We kind of lost our momentum there," Timberlake coach Roy Albertson said. "Riverside has a good offense and are a big football team. They're pretty solid at each position and were pretty even with them until that delay."

Christian Heth had 16 carries for 98 yards and one touchdown and quarterback Brian Cronnelly went 11 of 25 for 126 yards passing with a touchdown and three interceptions for Timberlake (0-2), which hosts Lakeland on Sept. 17.

T-WOLVES

from B1

"Michael's really all we had coming back this season," Benedick said. "He kept us going early on tonight and did a good job taking some of the pressure off Kai in the first half. Lake City is pretty dang good. They put a lot of pressure on and when they got into something, they'd throw a changeup. They're pretty talented and well-coached."

Lake City lost senior running back Jacob Bowman to a knee injury on their second possession of the game.

"We're going to have to adapt because it looks fairly serious," Lake City coach Van Troxel said. "(Levi) Hewitt made some nice plays - but they were called back due to penalties."

Allen Carmichael had 21 carries for 74 yards and two touchdowns for Lake City.

"We still have a chance to be a good team," Troxel said. "Hopefully they'll learn from this and get better from these things."

Lake City had chances late in the fourth quarter, getting into Maverick territory on a 50-yard pass from Mark Smyly to Colton Carlson with less than four minutes remaining. Lake City could not move the ball on fourth and 5 as Smyly was sacked and the Timberwolves had to give the ball back on downs.

After a three-and-out on defense, Lake City faced another fourth down and could not convert with 40 seconds remaining as Richie Childers was tackled short of the first down marker.

"It was a good ball game," Troxel said. "We missed some tackles, missed some blocks, but we'll learn from this and get better. It just looked like we didn't make the improvement from Week 1 to Week 2."

Lake City travels to Capital (Boise) on Friday at 6 p.m. The game will also be webcast on www.idahosports.com.
