Cardinal wrestlers open with win

HAVRE, Mont. - Former Lakeland High standout and All-American Kyle McCrite got things started for North Idaho College with a 17-0 technical fall victory in the 125-pound match and the Cardinals began their season with a 30-12 win over Montana State-Northern on Friday night.

NIC's Braden Mowry (141), a former Coeur d'Alene High standout earned an 8-2 decision in his first collegiate match. Former Viking and All-American Jesse Neilsen (174) added a pin in 3:23 for the Cardinals in his 174 match.

"It's a tough trip to jump off the bus, make weight and wrestle, but they went right out and did it," NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. "Kyle came right out and lit it up, Jesse competed well with a pin and Mowry took on a tough kid for the win."

The Cardinals, visit University of Great Falls today at 7 p.m. PDT.

SALT LAKE CITY - Gabriella Rifilato had 15 assists and 11 digs for No. 6 North Idaho College in a 25-18, 18-25, 25-22, 25-14 Scenic West Athletic Conference loss to No. 17 Salt Lake (24-5, 5-4).

Brenna Peterson added 17 assists for the Cardinals (22-6, 8-1), who face Snow (16-12, 5-3) today at 10 a.m. at Ephriam, Utah.
