Lake City boys win in shootout
IDAHO FALLS — Donald Osborne-Moss connected on the fifth penalty kick to lift the Lake City Timberwolves past the Timberline Wolves of Boise 1-0 in the opening round of the state 5A boys soccer tournament Thursday at the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex.
T.J. McWhorter and Evan Teichmann scored to give the Timberwolves a 2-1 lead after four shooters in the best-of-five shootout. Tanner Horton stopped two of the Wolves’ shots and another sailed wide. Osborne-Moss’ goal clinched the win.
“I just looked up and saw it was going through,” said Osborne-Moss, a senior. “I just cleared my mind and was just happy I made it. If I didn’t, I knew that Tanner (Horton) had my back.”
Horton, a freshman, had 12 saves for Lake City (10-4-3), which faces Borah (13-3-2) in a semifinal match today.
“Tanner had a couple of amazing saves for us and was amazing in the shootout,” Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. “They’d missed some shots wide and made some plays.”
“I just wanted to save the ball,” Horton said. “We started well and I just wanted to keep it going.”
“They (the Wolves) were a senior-based team,” Beadell said. “It was a great effort by both teams. It was a tough game, but we had some great chances to score.”
Both teams had second-half goals called back due to offside calls.
“Our kids just played their hearts out and everyone played huge,” Beadell said.
Borah, the No. 4 seed from District 3, edged top-seeded Boise 3-2.
