New technology...more ways to help us to help you

So you don't have pain? You don't have any symptoms that are screaming at you that something may be wrong inside your body? Is it still necessary for you to do whatever you can to take good care of your body so you can live a healthy, vibrant life? The answer is an astounding YES!

An important message I pass along to all is how important it is to have your spine checked even before you have pain or any other symptoms that present themselves. Think about the many diseases you know of that are obviously present in the body long before symptoms are noticed... cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease to name a few. Fortunately we are able to detect many abnormalities early thus helping to avoid further problems including pain and/or symptoms that will cause your life to be unpleasant and certainly less than you desire.

A chiropractor can examine your spine and learn a great deal that can not only help you once the symptoms occur but we can also discover problems causing areas in your spine that are causing damage without your knowledge... before pain appears. We perform our evaluation of the spine by using many techniques. Of course, we use our hands to palpate the spine and x-rays can further help us to learn where abnormalities of the spine are present. We now are very fortunate to have in our office new technology that further aids us in detecting problem areas of your spine. This new equipment is called the Insight Subluxation Station.

This computer technology that we now use has been used by the Space Program to measure changes in the spinal muscles of astronauts caused by space flight. This instrument has received exclusive certification by The Space Foundation, which is co-founded by NASA.

The process we use with the Subluxation Station is a computerized, non-invasive and painless series of evaluations that involve three different procedures. A closer look at the three major test performed with the Subluxation Station includes the SEMG (surface electromyography) scan which is also known as the "muscle graph" scan. This measure how well the nerves going to muscles are working by reading the amount of electrical current found in the muscles.

One way to help locate vertebral subluxations is by measuring this integrity of nerve-muscle communication. Vertebral subluxations cause supporting muscles of the spine to exhibit unusual electrical activity.

The second scan is the IRT. The infrared thermography scan measures skin temperature on either side of your spine. Research has documented that inflammation inhibits a person's overall health and well being. Measuring skin temperature at certain levels of the spine can detect nerve system disturbances that may affect other vital organs. The final scan used with the Subluxation Station is the Pulse Wave Profiler. This measures heart rated variability, skin conductance and pulse rate. This is used to get a window into how the autonomic nervous system modulates heart rate in the baseline or resting state. Published research has demonstrated that chiropractic adjustments have favorable effects of heart rate variability parameters. For the first time, in addition to measuring parameters on or around the spine, we are able to directly measure the effect of chiropractic care on the function of a vital organ.

As you can imagine, we at Spoelstra Family Chiropractic are excited about our new technology and how it is helping us to help you! This state-of-the-art technology will objectively detect potential areas of nerve interference, document and monitor results and help determine the appropriate care for our patients.
