Cd'A Brewing Co. won't re-open in Cd'A

Coeur d'Alene Brewing Co., which operated in downtown Coeur d'Alene for 23 years before closing last month when its lease expired, will not re-open in the Lake City.

"Finding a location that suits both the retail/customer-oriented needs of a restaurant and at the same time suits the light industrial needs of the brewery is difficult, but it was the combination of location, the expense to re-establish the operations and difficulty with financing that created a puzzle we weren't able to solve," said Gage Stromberg, president of the company. "After working on it for months, late last week our last and best hope for getting the pieces together fell apart."

He said they will continue operating their restaurant in Moscow and continue to brew beer at the Steam Plant Grill in downtown Spokane.

Stromberg said their next preference is to find a local buyer who is interested in re-establishing the brewery and hopefully re-hiring his brewers and other employees.

"We have had inquiries aboutpieces of equipment or parts of the operation, but hope we can find a buyer for the whole operation and that will be our next focus," he wrote.

Don "Pepper" Smock, owner of the building at Second and Lakeside, hopes to open a cafe or bistro at the location.

Idaho Film Office names 2010-11 grant recipients

The Idaho Film Office recently announced the recipients of its 2010-2011 film grants. This inaugural program is intended to advance the film-making workforce in Idaho through hands-on production experience on an eligible project.

The KNIFVES organization in Coeur d'Alene, producing "Root Bound," received $3,000.

The short film covers a story of a young professional who denies his Idaho roots when he is hired by a national television show.

"Well-planned with very professional mentoring and workforce training," a judge wrote. "Professional growth in spades."

"Script fun yet with much depth."

Grant recipients will work with the Idaho Film Office to complete their projects within the 14-month timeline, providing written reports of progress along the way.
