He only needed one day
Jim Pierce had only one day to devote to hunting, opening day to be exact, with friends south of St. Maries. Not to worry for the overachieving Washington Trust banker ... he filled both his deer and elk tags by 9:30 a.m. on the 10/10/10 opening day with a 2-point mule deer and a 5-point bull elk. No word yet about the success of his fellow hunters, Matt Lyman, John Young and Curtis Gregory.
There's one fewer few good men on Earth since the passing on Saturday of 91-year-old Roy Weaver, USMC Gunnery Sergeant (RET). Less than a week after the bombing of Pearl Harbor he was captured by the Japanese and spent three and a half years as a POW. Roy Weaver was part of America's Greatest Generation, continuing to be active in veterans causes and with Pappy Boyington Detachment 966 of the Marine Corps League, attending their meeting just two days before he passed.
I will miss seeing that bulldog of a man bedecked in his red jacket, still looking like he could give much younger men a real run for their money, always paying respect to his fellow Marines. Roy was a Marine's Marine and will be missed by many but welcomed in Heaven and the Halls of Montezuma. Semper Fi.
Loved seeing two great people receive recognition at the Coeur d'Alene chamber's annual luncheon last week. The Citizen of the Year recipient, Barb Bradley is indeed the epitome of a good citizen. Volunteer of the Year John McGruder has over four decades of service to the community under his belt. He received Citizen of the Year honors himself, 18 years ago!
I met a longtime Main Street reader at the grocery store the other day and don't know how she's missed getting on my Birthday Club radar before now. The absolutely beautiful and ageless Doris Carlson turned 90-years-young on Sept. 24. I promised Doris and her daughter, Wendy Nichols Olson, that I'd be there with bells on for her 91st celebration.
Happy 80th birthday today to former state senator and incredible community volunteer Mary Lou Reed. Own that age Mary Lou, you look maaaavelous! Others celebrating today are Mary Willeford, Luke Malek, Nick Peacock and former PFHS head football coach Jerry Lee. Tomorrow Carley Goodlander turns 18! On Friday Glen Christmann, go-to guy in the Press newsroom, and Chastin Jaeger have birthdays. On Saturday my editor's favorite columnist, Sholeh Patrick, is the birthday girl, along with my darling grandson Connor Huft. Tim Snyder, Nathan Tull and Holly Hansen also have Oct. 23 birthdays. On Sunday Melissa Donohoe and Jeff Turk will blow out their candles and Sue Waltz starts the week with her big 5-0, sharing the day with Kristy Reed Johnson. On Tuesday Gail McGaughey, Brock Prince, Linda Jones and Wanda Brust will get their party on!
THERE'S MORE ... at More Main Street see Roy Weaver on Armed Forces Day, Jim Pierce's bull elk and all of the things that didn't fit into this week's column. :)
