Vikings champs in overtime

| October 17, 2010 9:00 PM

COEUR d’ALENE — Earlier this week, Adam Borshiem was on crutches and destined for rest prior to next week’s state tournament.

On Saturday afternoon, the junior played a key role in Coeur d’Alene winning its fourth straight 5A Region 1 championship.

Borshiem scored the winning goal in the second overtime to lift the Vikings past the Lake City Timberwolves 2-1 at Coeur d’Alene High.

Borsheim suffered an injured ankle in Tuesday’s win over Lewiston which qualified the Vikings for the state tournament. That night his father, a doctor, said there was an 80-percent chance his ankle was broken.

As it turned out, it was just a massive contusion up and down his ankle. Borshiem showed up Saturday hoping to play.

“I was shocked that he could play today; I was going to hold him out,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Lake said.

In overtime, Borshiem took a through ball from Graison Le at the top of the penalty area, dribbled in and scored from 15 yards out on a shot just inside the left post in the 94th minute.

“We hit the post three or four times,” Lake said. “We had a lot of opportunities. The boys kept fighting; we fent we could come back and win the game.”

Luke Barrett gave Lake City a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute. Coeur d’Alene tied it on an own goal 10 minutes later.

Lake praised the defense of Kevin Hampson on Lake City’s Chris Wheelock, and said Wheelock, sweeper Mason Sanchez and keeper Tanner Horton played well for Lake City.

“Grant Stimmel played huge in the back for us,” Lake said. “He’s the glue that holds this team together.”

Lake City had also already qualifed for state at the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex; Saturday’s game was for seeding purposes at state. Coeur d’Alene (12-3-2) opens Thursday at 10 a.m. PDT vs. defending champion Centennial (11-3-3). Lake City (9-4-3) opens Thursday at 1 p.m. vs. Timberline (10-4-3) of Boise.

“It gives us a good mentality going into state,” Lake said. “For me, it (the win) is more for the team’s psyche; any team you play from Boise, they’re good.”

LEWISTON — Manuel Calderan had three goals and one assist as the Wolverines defeated the Lumberjacks at Walker Field to advance to the 3A state boys tournament in Twin Falls.

“We ran into a buzz saw today,” St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. “They didn’t come in third at state last year for nothing. They’re all really fast and move around well. We had a few looks, but just missed a little bit. Weiser’s a good team no question and we got a good look at what third at state looks like.”

Judd Sempel had nine saves for St. Maries, which concludes the season 7-9-3.

Lake City 2

LEWISTON — Becky Short connected for the sixth penalty kick to put the Timberwolves ahead and Brittany Amburn made the save that clinched the Region 1 girls soccer tournament championship over the Bengals at Walker Field.

Lake City won its first regional title since 2005.

“It was a wild game for both teams,” Lake City coach Matt Rutchi said. “We were able to counter their momentum in the second half.”

Taylor Hoffman tied the match at 1 late in the first half on an assist from Kassie Torres for Lake City (8-6-3), which faces Mountain View in the opening round of the 5A tournament on Thursday at the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex.

Both teams made all five of their penalty kicks in the first round of the shootout.

“We had some interesting calls go against us today,” Rutchi said. “We were able to remain focused through the penalty kicks and Brittany came up big in the shootout. For a sophomore to have three saves in a championship match was impressive.”

Kellsi Parson scored in the 18th minute for Lewiston (9-2-6), which opens against Boise (14-3) on Thursday.

Payette 2

Kellogg 1

LEWISTON — The Pirates defeated the Wildcats to advance to the 3A girls state tournament starting on Thursday at the Sunway Soccer Complex in Twin Falls.

Payette scored in the 11th and 41st minute. Kellogg was bidding for its first trip to state.

“We’re very disappointed with the outcome today,” Kellogg coach Steve Mills said. “We thought we had it. We had one mental lapse and couldn’t quite recover. It was a good match between two evenly matched teams. We pushed hard to tie the match and played until the final whistle. Unfortunately, that’s as far as we’ll make it this year.”

Kiana Aros scored in the 13th minute and Marah Ashcraft had four saves for Kellogg, which finishes 6-6-3.
