IDAHO FALLS (AP) - Police in eastern Idaho said a hunter in Madison County was shot by another hunter after being mistaken for a deer.

Police said 35-year-old William Hansen was shot in the chest about 7:15 p.m. on Friday by 57-year-old Mark J. Later.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office said that rescuers took Hansen to a nearby field where he was airlifted to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls.

A spokesman at the hospital on Saturday afternoon said Hansen is in critical condition following surgery on Friday.

Police say an investigation is continuing.
