POST FALLS — Last Thursday, Lake City was playing to avoid facing rival Coeur d’Alene in a 5A Region 1 tournament loser-out game on Tuesday afternoon.

After a couple lucky bounces, the Timberwolves will see the Vikings again, but this time in the regional championship game on Saturday following a 1-0 win over Post Falls on Tuesday in the semifinals of the regional tournament.

Lake City senior Donald Osborne-Moss scored the match’s lone goal 8 minutes, 35 seconds into overtime to qualify the Timberwolves for the state tournament Oct. 21-23 at the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex.

“It’s incredible,” Osborne-Moss said of his game-winning shot. “Evan (Teichmann) was in front of me and the net and I tried to keep my cool. I saw a chance and wanted to put it away.”

Osborne-Moss gathered the rebound of a shot from Lake City freshman Rikki McCaw and sent his shot from 10 feet away past diving Post Falls goalkeeper Monty Boyd for the score.

Lake City (9-3-2) qualifies for its first state tournament in three years and will determine seeding on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Coeur d’Alene, which defeated Lewiston 3-0 in the other semifinal on Tuesday.

“I’m at a loss for words right now,” Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. “It’s been a long season already, but our seniors finished it off. Post Falls really took it to us today, but Tanner (Horton) was huge for us.

The funnest part of the match was watching the chess match between Scott Benner (Post Falls) and Chris Wheelock (Lake City). Post Falls had an unbelievable season and I feel for their seniors.”

Horton, a freshman, made 15 saves on 18 shots on goal by Post Falls (12-4-1).

“Tanner’s the most composed kid I’ve seen at keeper,” Beadell said. “He seems to calm down when the ball is coming at him. He’s tough to beat and an unbelievable goalie. It’s really hard to find someone like that. He’s all over the place and I know they outshot us today.”

“I knew that if they scored on anything today, we’d have a hard time winning the match,” Horton said. “We’ve really stepped it up the last couple of weeks. There was a week when we had three matches and didn’t get a win. Ever since, we’ve really stepped it up.”

Post Falls, which fell last Thursday at Lake City 4-0 to slip to the second seed in the tournament, failed to score in its final three matches of the season.

“We had the best overall record in the league this season, with a nine-game win streak and then stumbled a couple of times,” said Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson, whose Trojans qualified for state last year for the first time since 1997. “We’ve had unbelievably bad luck the last week and that was our season. Coming into today, we had a little loss of confidence after losing to them last week. Had we won that, we’re probably heading into the tournament against Lewiston. We’re disappointed because we had the run of the play. We had some missed opportunities and we know we played better. Lake City never folded under our pressure. They had some chances on counters. This is a real heartbreaker.”

First half — none. Second half — none. Overtime — 1, LC, Donald Osborne-Moss (unassisted), 88:35.

Shots on goal — LC 8, PF 18.

Coeur d’Alene 3, Lewiston 0: Sophomore midfielder Adam Garman scored two goals as the top-seeded Vikings beat the fourth-seeded Bengals (5-11) to advance to the state 5A tournament next week in Idaho Falls.

“We did this truly playing as a team,” first-year Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Lake said. “We’re distributing the ball as a team, attacking as a team. Our first goal was to be the top seed in the region. Now we’re looking to accomplish our other goals.”

Drew Morgan added another goal on an assist from Jorge Villalobos in the 26th minute for Coeur d’Alene (11-3-2), which hosts Lake City on Saturday to determine seeding to state from Region 1.

“After the last match at Lake City (a 1-1 draw), we felt our destiny was out of our hands,” Lake said. “We feel good about playing at home.”
